The European Tour stays in Spain again this week but moves off the mainland to the Balearic Island of Mallorca for the Mallorca Open and teeing it up at Santa Ponsa which has hosted six European Tour events from 1988 and 1998. Seve won in a play-off here in 1992 beating Jesper Parnevik on the sixth play-off hole. Seve won here three times in 1988, 1990, and 1992 and Miguel Angel Jiménez won here in 1996.
The Golf Santa Ponsa 1 course was designed by Folco Nardi in 1977, and at the time the par 5, 10th hole was one of the longest holes in Europe weighing in at 590m/616yds! Five of the ten par fours measure more than 400 yards, with the dogleg right final hole being played uphill and measuring 462yds.
The course is still one of the longest layouts on the island with wide, flat fairways and while the greens are true and well maintained, there isn’t many complexes to them, so I would expect low scoring this week.
My tips to Win:
I did tip Adri Arnaus 22/1 – with UniBet – at last weeks Estrella Damm Andalucian Masters and I am going to stick with him this week even after his missed cut which I believe was a hangover from missing out in the play-off at the Open de Espana the week before. Adri had two Top 10 finishes on the Canary Island swing of the Tour earlier in the season, the Balearic Islands may not be the Canaries, but he will still enjoy a lot of home support and I expect him to compete again this week
It has been an up and down season for Sam Horsfield 25/1 – with SportingBet – having only finished outside the Top 25 once in his first eight starts which included three Top 5 finishes, one of which came at the Gran Canaria Open, where he fired three rounds 66 or lower! Having not played in any of the mainland Spanish events I am sure Sam will be looking to get off to a quick start this week as we enter the final months of the season
It has been over three years since Alexander Björk 28/1 – with PaddyPower – won on the European Tour with his victory at the Volvo China Open, but he comes into this week on the back of a Top 5 finish at a very tough Real Club Valderrama, his third Top 10 finish so far this year. Alexander played in two of the Canary Island events finishing inside the Top 25 in both so I am sure he will be looking forward to competing in the Balearic Islands.
Each-way tips:
Two Top 20 finishes from his last two starts both on Spanish soil and I am sure Pablo Larrazábal 33/1 – with UniBet – will be looking forward to playing in front of a partisan crowd again this week. Pablo only played in two of the three Canary Island events back in May, but did manage a Top 15 at the Tenerife Open and he will be going all out to win in front of home support again something he has yet to achieve.
A Top 5 finish at the weekends Estrella Damm Andalucian Masters should see Ryan Fox 33/1 – with 888Sport – come into this week in confident mood and was his third Top 25 finish in his last four starts. Ryan didn’t play in the Canary Island leg of the schedule earlier in the year but I think he has obviously found something in the last couple of weeks and I expect him to challenge again this week.
Outside tip:
The Canary Island leg of the European Tour proved to be a happy hunting ground for Connor Syme 80/1 – with 10Bet – with two Top 15 finishes from his three starts, one of which was a fifth-place at the Gran Canaria Open. Connor comes into this week having not played so well over the last couple of weeks, but as the tour starts to get to the business end of the season and heading to the Balearic Islands I think these are good odds for the Scotsman.
