| Firstly congratulations to Collin Morikawa on becoming the 2021 Champion Golfer of the Year, what a wonderful display of golf by all those that challenged on Sunday.
The European Tour now moves to Wales and the 2010 course at Celtic Manor
designed specifically for the 2010 Ryder Cup the Celtic Manor resort was conceived and developed by Sir Terence Matthews. In the late 1970s, Matthews bought a manor house and turned it into a small hotel. Sir Terence’s long-term vision was a golf resort and he employed the design skills of Robert Trent Jones Jnr and the Wentwood Hills course was opened for play in September 1999.
A bit of Augusta, a bit of Florida and a lot of Wales, was how they referred to Wentwood Hills, Trent Jones Jnr described the course as “a true championship course that combines a hilly landscape with the more traditional links-like features of an estuary.
In July 2007, the first course to be built specifically for the Ryder Cup opened for play. The “Twenty Ten”, was a collaboration between the European Tour, golf course architects and European Tour professionals, the objective was to create a unique Ryder Cup venue.
The new Twenty Ten course measures 7,493 yards par 71 and features nine new holes that have been routed through the Usk Valley, and incorporates nine holes from the former Wentwood Hills course, these have been extensively re-fashioned. The new design ensures that each hole is an exacting test but are also designed in a way to make each hole an amphitheater, offering spectators perfect viewing positions to see the action unfold.

My tips to Win:
He may not be defending the Wales Open title but Sam Horsfield 16/1 – with BetFred – did win the week before at Celtic Manor in the Celtic Classic and while he was the favourite going into the Wales Open the following week, it didn’t pan out the way the Englishmen wanted, but he did fire a final round 65 so Sam will have lots of positives to draw on as he arrives here this week.
A Top 20 finish at The Open Championship will only add to Justin Harding 16/1 – with BetWay – already growing confidence that a win and six other Top 25 finishes brings and while he didn’t challenge here last year in both events – although he did make the cut in both – I think in his current form he will be in one of the final pairings come Sunday
Another player that finished well at the Celtic Classic last year is Spains Adrian Otaegui 25/1 – with 888Sport – who had a Top 15 finish shooting all four rounds in the 60s and followed that up a week later at the Wales Open finishing just outside the Top 30. Adrian has three wins on the European tour his last coming when he opened and closed with rounds of 62 and 63 to take the Scottish Championship, so not only can he go low to close out a tournament, he knows how to play on open windy courses.
Each-way tips:
It always surprises me to see John Catlin 40/1 – with MansionBet – this far down the betting odds, especially having won three times over the last two years, his last victory coming in a play-off at the Austrian Open earlier this year when he fired a final round 65. John also won the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama and the Irish Open at Galgorm Castle both in very tough conditions and he also had a sixth-place finish here last year at the Celtic Classic and I expect him to be in the thick of it again come Sunday.
Connor Syme 45/1 – with OddsChecker – finished inside the Top 10 at both the Celtic Classic (3rd) and Wales Open (8th) last year firing a third round 63 at the Celtic Classic so he will have plenty of positive memories to draw on when he arrives here this week. Conner has had a couple of Top 5 finishes earlier in the year, but has not really challenged over the last couple of months, his best result being an eighteenth-place finish at the European Open, but I feel being back here could be the spark he needs.
Outside tip:
Similar to Connor Sebastian Heisele 110/1 – with OddsChecker – had Two Top 15 finishes here last year at the Celtic Classic and Wales Open and that should see him arrive here looking forward to teeing it up on the 2010 course. It has been an up and down season for Sebastian having only had one Top 10 finish at the Canary Islands Championship, but after several missed cuts he had a solid Scottish Open firing a final round 66 and that along with those memories from last years tournaments could get his season back on track and worth a pound each-way punt at these odds.
Longer odds:
Try Romain Wattel 500/1 – with UniBet
As always good luck
