It's the European Tour's flagship event this at the stunning Harry Colt West course on the Wentworth Estate, not many people know that Colt also designed the East Course, which is a course I really enjoy playing. Ernie Els made some changes to the West course between 2005 – 2010, which were not received with universal appraisal.

The clubhouse was originally known as Wentworth house in the 19th century and was the home to the brother-in-law of the Duke of Wellington, it was then sold to a Spanish exile by the name of Count Ramon Cabrera in 1850. After his death his wife purchased some of the surrounding land to form what become known as the Wentworth Estate.

In 1912 builder WG Tarrant acquired the developing rights for the Estate and based on his St Georges Hill model commissioned Harry Colt to design a course around the Wentworth house. Tarrant then developed the large houses that you see on the estate today. And in an echo of today’s financial climate, development of Wentworth Estate ground to a halt due to the Depression of the late 1920s.

In 1931 the banks asked for repayment of a large debenture that had been taken out, Surprise Surprise Tarrant was forced to declare bankruptcy. The ownership of Wentworth Estates Ltd came under the control of Sir Lindsay Parkinson & Co Ltd.

My tips to Win:

At this current moment Shaun Lowry 18/1 – with WilliamHill – will make the European Ryder Cup team, but with 8k R2D points on offer Shaun – who currently occupies ninth-place really needs to have a good week to not get pipped at the post. The good news for the Irishman is that Wentworth is a course he always seems to play well on and while he has not won here he does have eight Top 15 finishes from his eleven starts, which includes a runner-up finish and three other Top 10s and I expect him to be in the thick of the battle come Sunday.

A runner-up finish at the weekends Italian Open should see Tommy Fleetwood 22/1 – with WilliamHill – arrive at Wentworth in confident mood. It has been a tough year for Tommy who started the season well with a Top 10 in Abu Dhabi and a Top 5 at the WGC Match-play but has not really challenged since then. Fleetwood is another player that has played well at Wentworth but has not really challenged but has three Top 15 finishes from his five starts, two of which are Top 10s and he will want to put in a good pre Ryder Cup performance.

From his five starts over the West Course Matt Fitzpatrick 22/1 – with BetFred – has had three Top 15 finishes two of which have been Top 10s and after winning the DP World Tour Championship I feel this year has not been the year the Yorkshireman was expecting, with his best finish being a runner-up at the Scottish Open and a couple of Top 5s on the PGA Tour. Matt’s Ryder Cup place is near enough secured but like the other Ryder Cup players I expect him to put in a strong challenge for this weeks title.

Each-way tips:

It’s been a meteoric rise for Rasmus Højgaard 50/1 – with BetFred – who has already won three times in his two years on the European Tour and his final round 63 at the Omega European Masters last month to take the red jacket showcased all his skills. Rasmus missed the cut here last year, but he is a very different player teeing it up this week to the one from last year and I think these are great odds for the Dane who sees his next step as competing for the very top prizes and he will be eyeing this weeks tournament as a start on that journey.

I am going to stick with Calum Hill 80/1 – with UniBet – who got off to a very ropey start at the Italian Open with a 75 and then added another one in the third round, but he also showed glimpses of the player that has won and had two other Top 10 finishes from his last four starts and he will certainly take a lot of confidence from his final round 66 coming into Wentworth and again I think these are great odds for the Scot.

Outside tip:

Banging on the door of his first European Tour win is Adrian Meronk 100/1 – with UniBet – who added a runner-up finish to his two Top 3 finishes this year. His final round 66 that put him leading in the clubhouse for a good while on Sunday at the Italian Open, will take a lot of confidence from the way he put himself in that position and will arrive at Wentworth in buoyant mood.

Longer odds:

Try Marcus Kinhult 350/1 – with UniBet

As always good luck
