The European Tour heads back to mainland Europe and home to the first European Tour event to be played after last years lockdown back in July last year, the newly named Austrian Golf Open will once again be played at the very familiar Diamond Country Club.

The 7,053 yards, par 72 course was designed by English architect Jeremy Pern, the once Vice President of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects. Opened in 2002, the Diamond course features water hazards on seventeen of the 18 holes, including the 192-yard 11th and 159-yard 15th par 3s, where both tee shots are played to island greens. If you manage to negotiate all of that, then you only have the 457-yard par 4 18th to complete, with water on the left of the fairway and out-of-bounds on the right!

First played in 1990, the inaugural Austrian Open was won by Germany’s Bernhard Langer. In 2010 when The Diamond Country Club first held this event, Keith Waters, Chief Operating Officer of The European Tour, said: “I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Christian Guzy, the owner of Diamond Country Club, for his commitment and support in securing the future of the Austrian Golf Open. The Diamond Course is one of the finest in Austria and I’m sure our Members will enjoying meeting the varied challenges it presents.”

My tips to Win:

While Sam Horsfield 16/1 – with UniBet – has never played in this event, he does come into this week on the back of two Top 10 finishes in Kenya and while they were played over the same course there were many players who missed the cut in the first or second event. Sam also had two wins on last years rearranged tour and will be looking to get that first win of the year.

With four Top 20 finishes from six starts including a runner-up at the Magical Kenya Open Kurt Kitayama 20/1 – with 10Bet – will becoming into this week with a lot of confidence in his golf game. This will also be Kurt’s first time teeing it up in this event, but the way he has played so far this year Kitayama will be looking to keeping his run of winning every year since coming onto the European Tour going.

Past champion Joost Luiten 22/1 – with BetFair – won this event back in 2013. Joost has played in this event six times and last year was the first time that he finished outside of the Top 10 finishing in eighteenth place and two of those finishes inside the Top 10 were third place finishes, so he obviously he enjoys playing the Diamond CC course.

Each-way tip:

If you take his last three tournaments from the back end of last year and his three tournaments so far this season Niklas Lemke 50/1 – with UniBet – has only been outside the Top 15 once in his six starts. Niklas has yet to win on the European Tour, if there is a formula to breaking that duck it would be to continue doing what he is doing now, playing consistent golf and keep putting himself in the heat of battle come Sunday afternoon.

It was good to see David Horsey 60/1 – with SportNation – back to challenging again at the Saudi International after missing the cuts in his first two starts of this season. David has a runner-up finish in this event and two other Top 10 finishes and with the confidence boost from Saudi I think he will be challenging again this week.

Outside tip:

This was the first event last year after lockdown on any of the European Tours and a final round 66 see Wil Besseling 75/1 – with BetVictor – take the third place spot outright. Wil has played some steady golf in the three tournaments he has played in so far this year with one missed cut, but being back here should give him the positive boost he needs to move his season on.

Longer odds:

Try Ashley Chesters 175/1 – with BetVictor

As always good luck
