Firstly congratulations to Steve Stricker and the US Ryder Cup team on a magnificent win and some amazing and exciting golf and commiserations to Pádraig Harrington and the European Team, it’s always a tough ask to win away, but to do it with no fans was always going to be an uphill battle.

I have to say both teams played the matches in a great spirit and showed sportsmanship while also maintaining a determination to win, unlike the fans booing the European players shots and with shouts of get in the bunker. Sadly that has now given the green light to European fans to do the same and it seems this type of behaviour will only continue to escalate.

The home of golf will see some of the best players in the world turn up to compete in this weeks Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The players will be competing on the hallowed turf that is St Andrews, but also Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, three of the best courses in Fife. All three are in Golf Monthly’s Top 100 courses of Great Britain and Ireland, only Kingbarns is just outside the Top 10 at number eleven.

My tips to Win:

After seeing the scenes at Whistling Straits yesterday I am sure Billy Horschel 14/1 – with 888Sport – will be proud of the US Team but at the same time hurting knowing that he should have been part of those celebrations. Billy will be going for back-to-back wins on the European Tour and will be pushing his case for his adaptability and shotmaking skills especially this week playing on links courses to build his case for making the 2023 US Ryder Cup team in Italy.

He may not have won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship but Tommy Fleetwood 14/1 – with 888Sport – does have a very impressive record here making the Top 5 in his first start he has gone on to play in the event nine times and has only been outside the Top 25 once and has two runner-up finishes and three other Top 5s, only the win has eluded him, so far.

Unlike Tyrrell Hatton 16/1 – with 888Sport – who had back-to-back wins here in 2016-17 and nearly made it three in a row missing out by one shot and finishing in the runner-up spot in 2018. Tyrell’s form hasn’t been great of late and obviously we don’t know how much the loss at Whistling Straits will affect both Tyrell and Tommy, but they both love this event and their shotmaking abilities have shone brightly here so I expect them to be in the thick of it come Sunday.

Each-way tips:

I am sure Victor Perez 30/1 – with SportingBet – will be looking to prove a point this week after being overlooked for a captains pick at the Ryder Cup and he is also the defending champion here from the last time the event was played back in 2019. Having said that I don’t think the form Victor was in coming into the BMW Championship warranted a pick with only two Top 20 finishes from his last 10 starts and several missed cuts on the PGA Tour, but he is the defending champion and does have that point to prove.

Having been born just down the road from St Andrews in Kirkcaldy Calum Hill 55/1 – with BetVictor – will be used to playing in the predicted 20-30mph winds this week. Calum had his first European Tour victory at the Cazoo Classic a few months ago which he followed up with his sixth Top 10 of the year, I think these are great odds as long as he can harness the energy from the home support and not let it overwhelm him.

Outside tip:

Very surprised that Joakim Lagergren 1251 – with BetFred – is this far down the betting odds, to say that he took to this event like ducks take to water wouldn’t be an understatement, Joakim has played in this event five times and has had four Top 15 finishes, three of which have been Top 5s!

Longer odds:

Try Thørbjorn Olesen 175/1 – with OddsChecker –
or Grant Forrest 200/1 – with SportingBet

As always good luck
