| The PGA Tour now moves from Bermuda to Texas and a new/old venue. This will be a new venue to the current tour players, but it was home to the Houston Open from 1951 to 1963. Memorial Park Golf Course is known as one of the best municipal courses in America, designed by John Bredemus the course was originally a 9-hole course with sand greens, built near the hospital at Camp Logan for use by convalescent soldiers.
In 1994, on behalf of Mayor Bob Lanier, Houston Park Board member Nancy Reynolds began a campaign to restore the golf course and preserve its historical quality while allowing for modern maintenance methods to help sustain the courses future. In 1995, the newly renovated 600-acre course opened with a floodlit driving range, putting and chipping greens, and a new clubhouse.
The course underwent a further redesign undertaken by Tom Doak’s Renaissance Golf Design firm at a cost of $13.5-million, the renovations were completed in November 2019 ahead of the PGA Tour's planned return to Memorial Park for this week’s Houston Open.
The redesign included sand capping fairways, installing additional drainage, and the irrigation pond was tripled in size, with the excavated material used to form additional contouring around the course. Eight of the original greens were moved, the par five 8th was lengthened, and the par four 9th was altered from a par four to a par three. The par five 15th is now a driveable par four and the 16th has been extended to a par five. Tees and fairways on the front nine were repositioned to bring the ravines into play from the 2nd through to the 7th holes and additional water hazards were incorporated into the design to strength the home stretch of holes, starting at the short 15th.

My tips to Win:
After a couple of weeks layoff due to a positive COVID test and no doubt a big dent to his Masters preparation Dustin Johnson 15/2 – with SportingBet – will be itching to hit the ground running this week. Dustin has only played once on the new wraparound season and that was at the US Open where he managed a sixth-place finish, but let’s not forget his run to his FedEx Cup victory where he finished runner-up, win, runner-up, win in his last four starts to take the title.
BMW PGA Champion Tyrrell Hatton 16/1 – with BetFred – followed up his win at Wentworth with a third-place finish at the CJ Cup, which I was actually surprised at but the jetlag did catch up with him the following week at ZoZo Championship. After some much-needed rest I am sure Tyrrell will be looking forward to his Masters preparation this week and he will be looking to be challenging come Sunday.
I am sure Viktor Hovland 25/1 – with WilliamHill – will have been disappointed at his performance at the ZoZo Championship, but he can take plenty of positives from his second round 64. I am impressed how Viktor still makes Top-15 finishes with his short game weaknesses, no doubt it will get better as he works on it with his coaches but that also shows you how much potential this lad has.
Each-way tips:
I am going to stick with Doc Redman 50/1 – with SportingBet – again this week after his second Top 5 finish in his last four starts on the new wraparound season. This is Doc’s second full season on the PGA Tour and I think these are great odds for someone who looks on the verge of winning their first tour title.
Most of you know how I feel about defending champions and this week’s defending champion is Lanto Griffin 50/1 – with Ladbrokes – and I have to say I was very surprised to find Lanto this far down the betting odds. Not only is he the defending champion which means no matter how bad their form players always tend to play well when defending a title, Lanto comes into this week on the back of a two Top 15 finishes and out of those eight rounds of golf he has shot 66 or better three times.
Outside tip:
Harry Higgs 125/1 – with Ladbrokes – seems to be starting the new season like he did last year, sitting on a rollercoaster. Two Top 25 finishes one of which was a runner-up at the Safeway Open and one missed cut from his four starts. With this lad anything is possible, but at these odds he’s worth a 50p each-way punt for a place.
Longer odds:
Try Ryan Armour 200/1 – with BetFred
As always good luck
