| The European Tour now moves back to Scotland – not sure why they didn’t play this one this week and then come to England for the BMW PGA – and tees up at the Fairmont St Andrews and The Torrance course a new venue for the European Tour, but the course has hosted events on the Challenge and Senior Tours.
The Torrance course underwent a multimillion-pound redesign in 2008 which included the rebuilding of all 63 bunkers on the course and the redesign of several holes, a new irrigation system was added and of course that old Robert Trent Jones saying drainage, drainage and more drainage.
The Torrance Course was designed by Denis Griffiths along with the late great Gene Sarazen and European Ryder Cup Captain, Sam Torrance and weighs in at 7,230-yard. Changes were made to eight of the course's holes during the redesign, which now offers golfers more risk-reward holes and utilises the natural contours of the land and it's dramatic coastal setting
The opening eight holes are routed up the hillside and sweep around the Fairmont St Andrews hotel and down to the coastal edge overlooking the North Sea, the course then opens out with verdant fairways flanked by fescue rough with a backdrop of the Tay Estuary and the county of Angus in the distance.
Considerable effort was made during the redesign to isolate holes on the back nine by introducing large, mounds between fairways and these changes have resulted in an inward nine that enjoys a wild, natural feel.

My tips to Win:
It says a lot about Matt Wallace’s 11/1 – with SportingBet – thinking that he hasn’t took the flight with the other world Top 60 players back to the states to play at Shadow Creek this week. Matt currently sits in 50th place on the rankings but it looks like he is prioritising a win and being in the thick of battle rather than taking a flight and risk feeling jaded and not playing so well in Las Vegas and with the Masters on the horizon I think this could turn out to be a very smart move.
Firing all four rounds in the 60s at Wentworth will see Lee Westwood 12/1 – with Ladbrokes – in confident mood this week. Lee opened up with a 62 at the Scottish Open two weeks ago and he will be hoping that the cold and rain don’t descend again over the weekend. Westwood has finished inside the Top 20 in his last five starts on the European Tour, which includes his thirteenth-place finish at a tough US Open and he will be looking to add to his Abu Dhabi Championship win earlier this year.
It seems like an age ago that Renato Paratore 25/1 – with SkyBet – won that opening event on the UK Swing of the rescheduled European Tour after months of lockdown and he hasn’t really challenged since. What does get overlooked is the fact that the first tournaments back where in Austria where Renato had a Top 15 finish before winning the British Masters and with a Top 7 finish at the BMW PGA Championship at the weekend, I am sure Paratore is hoping that combination repeats its self again this week.
Each-way tip:
After not competing last week I am sure Connor Syme 33/1 – with SportingBet – will be itching to do well in his native Scotland. The last three events haven’t gone well for Connor after finishing in the Top 20 four times on the spin with three of those being Top 10 finishes, so maybe a time to reflect and practice on any weaknesses was needed. I am sure playing at home with or without crowds adds that extra incentive to do well and I expect to see Syme back to challenging again this week.
Four Top 20s from his last five starts shows Masahiro Kawamura 40/1 – with Ladbrokes – is in great form, the only blip in that run was at the Scottish Open when Masahiro shot a third round 77 in those tough cold, damp conditions after opening with a pair of 69s. Kawamura has won on the Asian Tour, but that was back in 2013, but at this moment in time he is in confident mood and as long as the weather doesn’t get too bad I expect him to be challenging this week.
Outside Tip:
Scott Hend 90/1 – with SportingBet – didn’t start the rescheduled season well and it has taken him a while to adjust to the new playing conditions, but two Top 11 finishes from his last three starts seems to point to the Australian getting used to not playing in front of fans. Scott is a multiple winner on the European Tour but he has only ever won out east in Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong and I am sure he would love to put that statistic right.
Longer odds:
Try Niklas Lemke 150/1 – with SkyBet
As always good luck
