| The European Tour now moves to Ireland for the Irish Open this time teeing it up at Galgorm Castle a course that I have had the pleasure of playing a few times now and once in the Northern Ireland Open ProAM an event that is played annually on the Challenge Tour. It maybe a new venue for some of the players this week, but there will be a few who have played here before who have now moved up to the European Tour and have very fond memories of playing here.
Galgorm Castle is a course that has matured well with age, unfortunately the weather today isn’t as nice as yesterday but I crash my driver down the fairway on this 437-yard dogleg right hole it is certainly a testing opener for both amateurs and professionals. The 2nd is another dogleg right played to a long thin green.
Water comes into play on the next three holes, but is more apparent on the 4th where you play over the water with your tee shot with water running down both sides of the fairway and comes into play again protecting the front of the green as you play your approach shot. It may only be 323-yards but it can certainly ruin a scorecard if you take it too lightly.
The 5th is the first of the par 3s on the front nine and again is played over a stream to a green that is protected by two bunkers. The other par 3 on this nine comes at the 7th and again water comes into play and anything short and right will be wet, the stonewall behind the pond gives the hole a visual appeal.

My tips to Win:
It seems George Coetzee 11/1 – with SportingBet – has picked up where he left off before the lockdown when he had two Top 10 finishes from his last two starts on the European tour and has comeback with a win and a third-place finish in his last two starts in Portugal. Ireland in September is going to present a different set of problems to solve, but given his current form you would expect to see him challenging again this week.
I have picked four previous winners of the Northern Ireland Open as it’s a regular tournament on the Challenge tour and played at Galgorm Castle and first up will probably be a very battered and bruised Ryan Fox 25/1 – with SportingBet – who missed the cut at the US Open firing a second round 85 over Winged Foot. So what better place to come to and get that out of your system than to a venue that you have won on before and as long as the jet lag has worn off I expect him to desperately trying to be in the thick of it come the weekend.
Each-way tips:
Last week’s win at the Open de Portugal isn’t going to faze Garrick Higgo 30/1 – with OddsChecker – who turned professional last year and promptly won three times on the Sunshine Tour, in fact from his seven starts his highest finish was a sixth place. Garrick will also have a bit of local course knowledge having played the Challenge Tour event at this venue earlier in the month, where he had a seventh-place finish and improved his score each day culminating in a final round 65.
The second past champion here is 2018 winner Calum Hill 50/1 – with UniBet – who has had a rollercoaster of a first season on the main Tour. Calum has four Top 20 finishes from his fourteen starts so far, but two of those are Top 10 finishes which have come in his last four starts both on UK courses in tough conditions at the Wales Open and UK Championship, which will no doubt be replicated this week in Ireland.
The third past champion is Joakim Lagergren 55/1 – with 888Sport – who seems to have found some form again over recent weeks with a Top 25 at a very tough Andalucía Masters, which he followed up with a third-place finish at the Portugal Masters. I am sure coming back to a venue that he will have fond memories of, will only give Joakim an extra confidence boost when he arrives here this week.
Outside tip:
Clément Sordet 80/1 – with Ladbrokes – has a win and a sixth-place finish at this venue from his time on the Challenge Tour so will no doubt be looking forward to being back here this week. Clément has not really challenged since regaining his European Tour card in 2018 but does have six Top 25 finishes this season from is thirteen starts and I feel these are good odds for someone who will feel at home over this track.
Longer odds:
Try Bernd Ritthammer 350/1 – with 888Sport
As always good luck
