Designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and set in the rugged Sonoran Desert surrounded by the stunning McDowell Mountains, the world famous Stadium Course plays host once again to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, made famous by the 20,000 fans that surround the par 3 16th, where golf meets football and WWF.

Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, probably never dreamed it would become famous throughout the world. "Really it was designed as just a little bridge hole to get to the 17th and 18th," said Weiskopf. "Here is this little par 3 that doesn't seem to be much of a challenge." Morrish said the hole has become a "rallying point for the unduly enthusiastic and sobriety-challenged portion of the gallery."

Some of the professionals competing in this week’s tournament will bring gifts to try and appease the crowd that surround this hole. A tee shot that misses the green or a putt that is left short is greeted by a crescendo of boos, it’s not a hole for the faint hearted.

The 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th are what make this an exciting tournament course. The 17th is a drivable par 4, "Short par 4s are hard to do correctly," Weiskopf said. "If you are going to lay up, I want the players to have the pressure of a tough chip and putt”. So remember while watching this tournament your money isn’t safe until your player has holed out on the 18th.

My tips to Win:

I am sure Jon Rahm 13/2 – with BetFair – will be in more determined mood this week after just missing out at the Farmers at the weekend, but what a finish after starting his final round so badly to give himself a putt to make the play-off. Jon has teed it up in this event four times and has not been outside the Top 16 and had a Top 5 finish in his first start here and I feel he is the man to beat this week.

Hideki Matsuyama 16/1 – with SportingBet – has an amazing record in this event having played in it five times he has two wins, a runner-up, a Top 5 and a fifteenth-place finish. Hideki has a runner-up and a third-place finish so far this year from his seven starts and while he didn’t challenge at the Farmers I am sure being back here will just bring with it all those positive vibes.

This week’s defending champion is Rickie Fowler 18/1 – with SpreadEx – who has recently changed coaches and while he missed the cut at the Farmers at the weekend he does have two Top 10 finishes from his other two starts this year including a Top 5 at the Tournament of Champions.

Each-way tip:

There are not many years since 2010 that Bubba Watson 33/1 – with SpreadEx – hasn’t won at least one tournament, but last year was one of them and I am sure the Floridan will want to get back to winning ways asap. There were good signs at the Farmers at the weekend and his six-place finish will set him up nicely coming back here where he has had two runner-up and three other Top 10s including two Top 5s.

Brandt Snedeker 35/1 – with WilliamHill – should be in buoyant mood as he arrives here this week after his third-place finish at the Farmers especially his final round 68 in tough conditions that see him move up the leaderboard four places. Brandt has a runner-up finish in this event and three Top 10s and I am sure he will be looking forward to teeing it up here again this week.

Outside tip:

Daniel Berger 90/1 – with SpreadEx – has played some steady golf this year without challenging but does have three Top 25 finishes from his six starts on the PGA Tour wraparound season so far. Daniel seems to enjoy the WM Phoenix Open and made the Top 10 in his first outing here, since then he has had two other Top 11 finishes from his six starts and if he is going to challenge to win an event this year I feel this will be one of them.

Longer odds:

Try Beau Hossler 125/1 – with Ladbrokes

As always good luck
