| The European Tour is back this week and tees up at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club in the UAE for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. This is the first of two Peter Harradine designed courses hosting the European Tour, the other being the Doha Golf Club which hosts the Qatar Masters which has moved to a new date in March.
The course weaves through undulating terrain and features palms, ornamental trees, shrubs, seven saltwater lakes, strategically placed bunkers and generous greens. The course opened for play in October 2000, where its iconic clubhouse in the shape of a falcon with outstretched wings underwent a refurbishment for last year’s event.
The course also had a bit of a make-over for the 2011 tournament, with new tees on the 8th and 10th, the 6th and 14th were extended taking the total yardage to a testing 7,590 yds, which will test one of the best fields to be assembled for a golf tournament so far this year.

My tips to Win:
I think Tommy Fleetwood 10/1 – with BetFair – has a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Abu Dhabi Golf Club track, in his first five starts here Tommy missed the cut four times, he then went on to have back-to-back wins, he did make the cut last year but finished down the field. The years Fleetwood did win here he went on to challenge in the majors and with that in mind I think he will be the man to beat this week.
After kicking himself for losing the South African Open by one shot at the weekend Louis Oosthuizen 16/1 – with SportingBet – will use that disappointment of not winning his home Open as a spur to go one better this week. Louis has played in this event five times and has a runner-up and two other Top 5 finishes including his fourth-place last year so the Abu Dhabi track obviously suits his eye.
Another player that seems to enjoy teeing it up here, but has not notched up a win yet is Thomas Pieters 33/1 – with BetFair – who like many players missed the cut in his first start, since then he has teed it up here six times and has a runner-up and three other Top 20s including two Top 5s.
Each-way tip:
Having missed the cut twice in his first three starts here Bernd Wiesberger 40/1 – with BetFair – has gone on to have three Top 15s finishes from his seven starts. Bernd finish last season well with a win and a third-place finish from his last five starts and will be looking to get his year off to a winning start this week.
Unlike a lot of my picks this week Joost Luiten 50/1 – with BetFred – hasn’t missed the cut here in his eight starts and has four Top 10s which includes two Top 5 finishes. Last season was Joost first full season back since his wrist injury and he had a creditable fourteen Top 25 finishes from his twenty-four starts which included six top 10s but his best finish came in this tournament where he had a third-place finish firing a final day 65.
Outside tip:
It was strange to see Pablo Larrazabal 80/1 – with SportingBet – this far down the betting odds. Pablo is a past champion here and won the Alfred Dunhill Championship last month, he also has a runner-up finish and another Top 10 over the Abu Dhabi course.
Longer odds:
Try Gavin Green 150/1 – BetFred
As always good luck
