Bethpage State Park was developed from an estate owned by the Yoakum family and leased their estate to the Lenox Hills Corporation who used the property to build the Lenox Hills Country Club. In the early 1930s, the Bethpage Park Authority purchased the Lenox Hills Country Club and other adjacent properties to build what is now know as Bethpage State Park.

Famed golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast was hired to design and oversee construction of three new golf courses (Black, Red and Blue) as well as modify the Lenox Hills Course which became the Green Course. Bethpage Black opened in 1936 where Joseph H. Burbeck, a superintendent at the State Park, was the driving force and the project manager who led the construction of the Black.

Narrow fairways, thick rough, plateaux greens and huge sculptured bunkers are what the players will face here this week. A.W Tillinghast used to refer to this track as the Black Leopard and stated, “You’ll need to be on top of your game to score well on the Black Leopard”

My tips to Win:

No surprise I have gone for the longer hitters for my picks to win at Bethpage Black, but also players that have a solid short game and Dustin Johnson 11/1 – with SportingBet – certainly comes into that category having worked diligently on his wedge play and distance control.

It may feel strange for Brooks Koepka 12/1 – with BlackType – defending this title so soon after winning it, but the new tour schedule sees a new date for the PGA Championship and after his warm up event at the Byron Nelson where he finished inside the Top 5, I feel he will put up a solid defence this week.

Jason Day 25/1 – with Ladbrokes – another big hitter that sits first in converting putts from 7-feet and 3rd in birdie averages. Jason shot a final round 66 here in the 2012 Barclays and had a Top 5 in the same event that was held here in 2016 and after his Top 5 finish at The Masters he will be looking to contend again in the second major championship of the year.

Each-way tips:

It is surprising that Tony Finau 40/1 – with Ladbrokes – has only won once on the PGA Tour and that was back in 2016 the same year he had a twelfth-place finish at The Barclays which was held over the Bethpage Black course. Tony challenged and fell away at this year’s Masters, but I feel that experience of being in the thick of it at a major championship will help him this week.

To be honest I was surprised to see Sergio Garcia 45/1 – with SportingBet – this far down the betting odds especially as he has three Top 10 finishes from his three starts over the Bethpage Black course with two of those being Top 5s in the 2002 US Open and a third place at the 2012 Barclays. Sergio also comes into this week on the back of three Top 5s from his last three starts and I think these are great odds for the Spaniard.

Outside tip:

Lucas Glover 125/1 – with SportingBet – won his only major at the 2009 US Open that was held at Bethpage and he will no doubt be looking forward to this week especially in his current form. Lucas has only been outside the Top 20 four times in fifteen starts on the wraparound season and he has four Top 10 finishes, three of them on the spin and he will fancy his chances to challenge this week.
