The Riviera Country Club was established in 1926 and has been open for play since 1927. Noted for its spectacular beauty and uniquely challenging design, the George C. Thomas masterpiece is perennially rated among the very finest in the world.

During the courses construction the renowned golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie paid a visit to inspect Thomas’s work. Following his tour of the property, Dr. MacKenzie remarked that the site “Was as fine as any I have seen" and that the George C Thomas’ design is “As nearly perfect as man could make it.”

Sometimes known as "Hogan's Alley" because of Ben Hogan's success here, it is also renowned for its par-3 sixth hole with a bunker in the middle of the green.

The 18th is probably one of golf's most unique and most recognised finishing holes. The green rests below the clubhouse in a natural amphitheater and a blind tee shot from below the level of the fairway must carry the crest of the hill to give you a decent look at the green.

My tips to Win:

With a win and two runner-up finishes in the last five years Dustin Johnson 9/1 – with PaddyPower – certainly feels as home at the Riviera Country Club. I did tip Dustin last week at the Pebble Beach ProAm and while he started well he did slide out of contention each day. I am sure being here and without the distraction of amateur golfers he will be back challenging again this week.

This week’s defending champion is Bubba Watson 22/1 – with SpreadEx – who has won this event three times in the last five years and has three other Top 15 finishes. Bubba didn’t play at Pebble Beach last week but did have a Top 5 finish in his last outing at the WM Phoenix Open and should be in confident mood this week.

Another player that should be in confident mood this week is Phil Mickelson 25/1 – with SportingBet – who won for the fifth time at Pebble Beach last weekend. I don’t normally go for back-to-back winners but Phil is certainly the exception this week because he loves teeing it up at the Riviera Country Club and has two wins and two runner-up finishes here and with his golf game in great shape, I expect him to be in the thick of it again this week.

Each-way tip:

Hideki Matsuyama 30/1 – with BetFair – has played in this event four times and has only been outside the Top 25 once and has a fourth-place finish where a final round 67 see him move up the leaderboard eleven places. By his standards Hideki has had a slow start to the year but two Top 15 finishes in his last two starts including a third place at the Farmers Insurance Open should see him challenging again this week.

Another past champion of this event is Adam Scott 35/1 – with UniBet – who defended his title with a runner-up finish and has had another runner-up and three Top 15 finishes in this event. Since the new rule change and being able to leave the pin in while putting Adam seems to have gained a lot of confidence with the flat-stick and has two Top 10 finishes from his five starts on the wraparound season including a runner-up at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Outside Tip:

A Top 5 finish at Pebble Beach ProAm at the weekend should see Scott Stallings 90/1 – RoyalPanda – in buoyant mood coming into this week. Scott has never really played that well here, but he did have a Top 5 last year and with his new fitness regime looking like it’s starting to pay dividends, consistency will know be the key.

Longer odds:

Try Kevin Na 125/1 – with UniBet

As always good luck
