Charles Howell lll
The South course at Torrey Pines was designed by William F Bell and opened for play in 1957. Rees Jones was commissioned to undertake a redesign in 2001 so the course would be ready for the 2008 US Open Championship. Who could forget that dramatic Championship which ended with Tiger Woods beating Rocco Mediate on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff (after an 18 hole play off) and with a fractured bone in one leg.
Torrey Pines sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla south of Torrey Pines State Reserve. Tight fairways, lush rough, pine trees, strategic bunkering and deep ravines are just some of the challenges ahead. Throw in the changing weather conditions, when fog, wind and rain come into play, they can often sweep in on this seaside layout. But you have a course that offers even the best golfers in the world a tough examination of their skills, both physically and mentally. Saying that I have shot a 57 on this course, but then that was on my PSP!
The complex takes its name from the indigenous Torrey Pine which is native to the area. The course is maintained by the City of San Diego and is open to the public and has enjoyed numerous awards, included amongst them is Golf Magazine's "Top 500 Holes in the World", 2000 (Par 4, 12th Hole) and Golf Digest Magazine's "America's 100 Greatest Public Access Golf Courses", 2005-2006.

My tips to Win:
With seven wins and one runner-up finish in this tournament it’s hard not to go with Tiger Woods 16/1 – with MarathonBet – this week and with a win and six other Top 10s last year, Tiger will be looking to start 2019 with a bang.
This week’s defending champion is Jason Day 16/1 – with SportingBet – who hasn’t been outside the Top 15 in his four starts on the PGA Tours wraparound season. Jason did struggle a bit in the middle of last year and maybe his was trying to push himself too much, but let’s not forget he did win two events and made the Top 25 in fifteen of his twenty starts.
Another past champion here is Jon Rahm 10/1 – SportingBet – who won this event two years ago. Jon has had two starts this year and made the Top 10 in both events and I expect him to be in the thick of it again this week.
This will be the third week in a row that I have tipped Charles Howell lll 33/1 – with SportingBet – Charles has already won on the wraparound season and has another two Top 10s from his seven starts. Howell has three runner-up finishes in this event and seven other Top 15s which includes five Top 10s. As you can imagine being so close to winning three times Howell will be desperate to finally get one over the line and his golf game is in good shape coming into this week.
Brandt Snedeker 45/1 – UniBet – has managed to get it over the line and win twice in this event he also has two runners-up finishes and three other Top 10s, including a third place finish the first time he teed it up here – its no wonder he enjoys this tournament so much.
He may have missed the cut last week at The Desert Classic but I think these are great odds for Luke List 80/1 – with Ladbrokes – who already has two Top 5s on the wraparound season. Last year was Luke’s best finish here and he was sitting in the Top 5, but a final round 75 see him slide out of contention, I am sure he will have learnt from that experience.
Try Nick Watney 150/1 – with SportingBet
As always good luck
