The venue of last years Ryder Cup matches, Le Golf National plays host to this week’s 103rd Open de France which will be played over the Albatross course that surrounds the Chateau of Versailles, once home of King Louis XIV and one of three courses that make up Le Golf National.

The French Open is one of the oldest Open Championships played in Europe, the first event was won by Arnaud Massy who then went onto win the championship three more times. He also won the Open Championship held at Royal Liverpool in 1907, becoming the first none British player to win the event.

In 1985, the French Golf Federation's Executive Committee decided they wanted to give the Open de France a permanent home and came up with a plan to build the Le National Club, it took three years to construct and was open for play in 1990. Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge designed the 6,854-yard Albatross course and although built on flat farmland it manages to combine a links feel with American style target golf. The course has wide undulating fairways, with links style bunkering, water hazards and with artificially created sand dunes it offers a tough test of golf.

My tips to Win:

Who can forget Alex Noren 12/1 – with SportingBet – holing that putt across the length of the 18th green to win his singles match at last year’s Ryder Cup. Alex is the defending champion this week and I am sure all those positive memories, plus his solid performance at the Italian Open at the weekend should see him teeing it up in confident mood come Thursday

I am going to stick with Erik Van Rooyen 14/1 – with UniBet – this week and as I stated earlier in the year I feel that the South African would not only win this year but would win at least two events. Erik did make the Top 10 at the Italian Open, which was his fifth Top 15 finish in six starts and I expect him to be in the thick of it again come Sunday

Another player that we have tipped recently and looks like he will be winning his maiden European Tour event very soon is Matthias Schwab 18/1 – with MarathonBet – who had his fourth Top 10 finish at the Italian Open at the weekend from six starts two of which was a runner-up finish at the Porsche European Open and another Top 5.

Each-way tips:

Marcus Kinhult 28/1 – with UniBet – won his first event on the European Tour earlier this year at the British Masters and it seems to have taken a while for him to settle and start competing again, I am certain its draining with all the media attention and takes some getting used to. Marcus did have his third Top 20 finish in five starts at the Italian Open last weekend and coming back here where he teed it up for the first-time last year and made the Top 5 I am sure he will be looking forward to this week to start challenging again.

I did mention a few months ago that Sam Horsfield 40/1 – with Ladbrokes – spent some time out in Florida with Ian Poulter which seemed to have been very productive, Sam may not have won but he has had some solid performances and no doubt he would have chatted with his mentor at the Italian Open. Horsfield did play in this event for the first-time last year and missed the cut but I feel it’s a different player turning up this week.

Outside tip:

I was quite surprised to see Jeunghun Wang 80/1 – with UniBet – this far down the betting odds, especially after making his second Top 10 in his last three starts at the weekend. Jeunghun had a Top 25 finish the first time he teed it up at La Golf National and in his current form I feel these are good odds.
