The European Tour is back this week and tees up at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club in the UAE for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. This is the first of two Peter Harradine designed courses hosting the European Tour, the other being the Doha Golf Club which hosts the Qatar Masters which has moved to a new date in March.
The course weaves through undulating terrain and features palms, ornamental trees, shrubs, seven saltwater lakes, strategically placed bunkers and generous greens. The course opened for play in October 2000, where its iconic clubhouse in the shape of a falcon with outstretched wings underwent a refurbishment for last year’s event.
The course also had a bit of a make-over for the 2011 tournament, with new tees on the 8th and 10th, the 6th and 14th were extended taking the total yardage to a testing 7,590 yds, which will test one of the best fields to be assembled for a golf tournament so far this year.

My tips to Win:
This weeks defending champion is Tommy Fleetwood 11/1 with UniBet who will be trying to make it three wins in a row at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, not many players put themselves in a position to pull this off and only Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros have managed to achieve this on the European Tour, which means Tommy come Sunday could be joining a very illustrious group.
I tipped Dustin Johnson 6/1 with 10Bet at the PGAs Tournament of Champions but a second round 74 after a great start see his challenge end, but he did finish well to make the Top 5. To be honest not too much fazes Dustin, but he will want to get off to a good start and keep that momentum going.
Last year wasnt a great one for Thomas Pieters 22/1 SportingBet after getting off to a good start in this event last year with a Top 5, he never really challenged again there was a couple of Top 10s and I am sure not making the Ryder Cup team must have left a bitter taste. Thomas will be buoyed by winning the World Cup with Thomas Detry and three Top 20s before that show Pieters may just be on his way back to playing some of his best golf.
Another player that didnt have the year he was expecting to have was Branden Grace 40/1 Smarkets with only a couple of Top 10s each side of the Atlantic and I am sure he will want to put things right this year. Branden has not been outside the Top 20 in this event in the last four years so obviously enjoys the course and I think these are great odds if he gets off to a good start.
Will the real Martin Kaymer 50/1 SportingBet please stand up! The German is a back-to-back winner of this event and had a Top 5 here two years ago and only had one other Top 5 that year. It does show how much Martin enjoys playing in this event and on this course, a couple of weeks of rest and practice over the winter and I am sure he will come out firing on all cylinders this week.
After nearly 5-months out with a wrist injury it was great to see Joost Luiten 92/1 Smarkets back on the fairways at the backend of the year. Joost started the year well with a win and a couple of Top 10s his comeback at the end of October see him only miss out on making the Top 25 once in four starts. I am sure Luiten is itching to start and I think these are great odds for the Dutchman.
