Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant and first opened for play on February 22, 1919, Pebble Beach is the venue of this week’s AT&T and home to some of the greatest US Open Championships ever played.

This is the only course that Jack Neville ever designed and he had one aim, to design as many holes as possible along the rocky Monterey coast line which he felt would be best achieved by using a 'figure 8' design. The course hugs the rugged coastline providing stunning views, cliff-side fairways and sloping greens.

Arnold Palmer is a share-holder and member of the Pebble Beach Company and he has been commissioned several times to make changes to the course which included lengthening the course to more than 7,000 yards, adding trees, new bunkers and moving some of the fairways closer to the sea.

I am away in St Kitts this week on an equipment testing trip and to review some of the courses on St Kitts and Nevis, check out the next issue of planetgolfreview magazine to read the reviews

My tips to Win:

After playing two events on the European Tours Desert Swing and winning the Saudi International at the weekend Dustin Johnson 11/2 – with BetFair – should be in buoyant mood coming into this week. Dustin has won this event twice had two runner-up finishes and three other Top 5s and that is why he will be the man to beat here this week.

I think Jason Day 9/1 – with 888sport – must be wondering what he needs to do to win this event. He has not been outside the Top 11 since 2015 and has six Top 15 finishes including three Top 5s one of which was a runner-up last year. Jason already has two Top 5 finishes from his five starts on the wraparound season and with his game in good shape, he will be looking to finally add this tournament to his collection of wins.

Runner-up twice out of the last three years here is impressive for Phil Mickelson 25/1 – with SportingBet – especially when you add that to his four wins and two other Top 5s. Phil won a couple of weeks ago at the Desert Classic another tournament he enjoys playing in and I am sure he will be in the thick of it again this week.

Each-way tips:

Matthew Fitzpatrick 50/1 – with SportingBet – has never really challenged when he has come over to play on the PGA Tour but so far, it’s all been a bit of a learning curve. Matthew has had a good start to his European Tour wraparound season campaign and I feel he may fair better stateside this year, the courses at Pebble Beach may just suit his golf game.

With two wins in this event I think Brandt Snedeker 50/1 – with SportingBet – is another player that enjoys teeing it up on the Monterey peninsula. It’s been a strange season for Brandt after coming so close at the Safeway Open and letting that tournament slip seems to have knocked his confidence, but I feel being back here may just get him back on track.

Outside tip:

Another past champion of this event is Jimmy Walker 100/1 – with Coral – and I think we all know by now the battle he has been having, but with four other Top 10s including a third-place finish, I think these are good odds for someone who shot 66 last week in Phoenix and looks to be getting back to playing good golf.

Longer odds:

Try Patrick Rodgers 175/1 – with UniBet

As always good luck
