The Players is always a great event and Pete Dye’s Stadium course is a fitting venue that doesn’t disappoint. Every year this course throws up drama and none more so than the 17th, plenty has been said about this hole, but there is a true replica at Eagles Eye golf club in Michigan that you can play if you can’t make it to Sawgrass.

The Players now offers the highest prize fund in golf at a staggering $10.5 million with the winner taking a $1.8 million cut of that. The tournament used to be a warm up to the Masters and played in March, but with the move to May as a lead up to the US Open, the course now plays very differently and is much dryer, harder and faster.

In 2006 the course implemented massive changes, they tore up the old course and then brought in 26,600 tons of sand, 2.6 million square feet of Bermuda grass, 116,600 feet of pipe for irrigation, 19 acres of sod for landscaping, 200 new trees made up of oaks, pines and palms, new natural waste areas, lower-level bunkers, greenside chipping areas and water hazards. From a spectators point of view it makes great viewing, the changes are seen as a positive move by both the players and the tour.

My tips to Win:

From his three starts at the Players Championship Justin Thomas 16/1 – with SportingBet – has finished inside the Top 25 twice with one of those being a third place finish, when a final round 65 see him storm up the leaderboard. Justin has won twice on the wraparound season so far and has only been outside the Top 20 three times from his twelve starts and I feel he will be the man to beat this week.

One player who will be looking to do that is 2015 PLAYERS champion Rickie Fowler 20/1 – with Coral – Rickie has been hit and miss over the Sawgrass track with several missed cuts but he also has a runner-up finish here as well as that win. Fowler does look like he is on the brink of winning and that runner-up finish at The Masters will only fuel his determination here this week.

For all his undoubted talent we are all still waiting for Jon Rahm 25/1 – with Ladbrokes – to win a big event and where I feel he was putting too much pressure on himself to prove he had that in him, I am sure his Top 5 finish at The Masters will have put those nagging doubts to rest. Jon has only played here once before and I am sure his distavorous third round 82 to miss the 56-hole cut will be put to rest and I expect the Spaniard to be in the thick of it this week.

Each-way tips:

It was good to see Phil Mickelson 35/1 – with BetFred – playing a practice round with Tiger woods this week and I am sure the 2007 PLAYERS Champion will be in confident mood this week after his Top 5 last weekend at Quail Hollow. For all his wayward driving Phil has won one event this year had a runner-up finish, three other Top 5 finishes and has only been outside the Top 25 three times from his twelve starts on the wraparound season and I am sure he will be in one of the final pairings here come Sunday afternoon.

Quietly creeping into form just in time for The PLAYERS Championship is Francesco Molinari 55/1 – with SportingBet – who I tipped at the weekend, he did make the Top 20 but didn’t quite get into a position to challenge. Francesco made the Top 10 on his first outing at Sawgrass and promptly followed that up with three missed cuts, but he has made the Top 10 in his last four starts here and I feel these are great odds for someone I can see putting in a real challenge this week.

Outside Tip

After looking like he would lose his playing rights Ian Poulter 70/1 – with BetFred – has certainly put the peddle to the metal, coming back with a win and another Top 10 from his last four starts. It seems like the “Postman” has got the bit between his teeth and with a two runner-up finishes here – one coming last year – he will be looking to make it third time lucky this week.

Longer odds:

Try Lucas Glover 175/1 – with Bet365

As always good luck
