There are two courses at Silverado, the North and South, which opened for play in April 1967 when the Silverado Country Club & Resort came into being. The original 18-hole course was redesigned into two 18-hole courses by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, and the North course, which is the track I play, has just been through another redesign, this time by 1976 Open Champion Johnny Miller.

If you have already read my review of Sonoma GC and how that takes course maintenance up another notch from Windsor, then Silverado takes it to a whole new level. I have never seen this many green-keeping staff in one place – and believe me I see them all as I’m first out chasing them round, making it round in two-and-a-half hours. There are at least two if not three or four guys on every hole.

My tips to Win:

To win: After finishing last season with a win and two other Top 10s from his last seven starts Brandt Snedeker 22/1 – with BetFred – should come into this week in confident mood. Brandt has teed it up twice over the Silverado North course and has not really challenged, but has improved each time and I expect him to be challenging this week.

Past champion of this event Emiliano Grillo 28/1 – with Bet365 – had a steady year last season with ten Top 25s with his best results being two third place finishes. Emiliano won this event in his first appearance at the Silverado Resort and just missed finishing inside the Top 25 over the last two years, which shows he enjoys playing here and I am sure he will use those positive memories this week to his advantage this week.

What Phil Mickelson 28/1 – with BoyleSport – will turn up this week is anyone’s guess, but what I am sure of he will want to do well here this week to prove that he had every right to be a one of Jim Furyks’ picks on the Ryder Cup team. Phil has played at the Silverado Resort for the last two years making the Top 10 both times, improving with each tournament and if that progression continues I expect him to be picking up the winners cheque this week.

Each way:

I was very surprised to see double defending champion Brendan Steele 40/1 – with Bet365 – this far down the betting odds. Anyone that is going for three in a row should be taken seriously no matter how they are playing at the time of entry. Not many people put themselves in such a position and you can bet he will be doing all he can to make that three in a row happen.

Jamie Lovemark 66/1 – with Ladbrokes – had a very up and down season and just when you thought he was going to make a breakthrough he would slowly slide back out of contention. Jamie has yet to win on the PGA Tour but does have two wins on the Tour and has a runner-up finish in this event when it was the and played at another venue, he also has a Top 20 over this track but I expect him to challenge this week.

Outside tip: winner Sungjae Im 100/1 – with BetFred – will come onto the PGA Tour buzzing with confidence after two wins and three runner-up finishes in his first season. Sungjae first came to the States in 2017 to compete in the second stage of the Q-School, which you can see with impressive results and I expect that to continue onto the PGA Tour starting this week.

Longer odds:

Try Scott Langley 300/1 – with PaddyPower

As always good luck
