This week seems another new playing format entering the European Tour schedule and hosted by Belgium Ryder Cup player Thomas Pieters. The idea is to play a 36-hole stroke play event with the usual cut, and the top 64 players will then compete in a match-play/stroke play event over 9-holes until the we find the winner.
It sounds like it will be an exciting competition, but I did like the six hole shoot out in the GolfSixes the other week, but we shall see. The good news is that the European Tour are prepared to try new formats which can only be good for the game of golf.
The venue this week is the Rinkven International Golf Club which sits on the outskirts of Antwerp and opened for play in 1981. The original course was designed by Belgian golfer and course architect Paul Rolin, but a masterplan for the venue was put in place by Russell Talley of Hawtree Ltd in 2014 and the first phase of those works finished in 2016.
There are two courses here a mixture of woodland and parkland with water coming in play on several holes and there are a variety of teeing options on both courses so you can pick according to your playing ability. The North Course measures 6,697-yards, par 72, while the South Course measures 6,546-yards, par 71. This week’s course will be a composite of the two courses to add length and to test the ability of some of the best players on the European Tour.
