The Royal Pines Championship Golf Course has played host to the Australian PGA Championship for the last four years and last year see a complete reconstruction of the first nine holes, which was undertaken by Graham Marsh.

Part of the redesign has seen the construction of several spectator mounds around the golf course giving elevated views of the course. The tournament course is a composite course, the gold has the flowing waters of the Nerang River and features both salt and fresh lakes with water coming into play on nine of the eighteen holes.

The green course is an oasis of emerald greens and hidden challenges. The final nine holes are a testing combination of deep bunkers with undulating greens and tight airways.

My tips to Win:

This week’s defending champion is Cameron Smith 6/1 – Bet365 – who comes into this week after a Top 10 finish in the Australian Open and a runner-up finish at the World Cup of Golf Tournament. Cameron is in good form at the moment and he will want to put up a strong defence of his title.

Another past champion is Harold Varner lll 10/1 – with PaddyPower – who won this event two years ago and put up a great defence last year finishing in sixth place. Harold has only been out of the Top 25 once in his five starts on the PGA Tours wraparound season and he will be in Confident mood this week.

A Top 5 finish at the Hong Kong Open at the weekend should see a confident Jason Scrivener 20/1 – with SkyBet – arriving though the gates this week. Jason’s last three starts on the European Tour have all been inside the Top 25 progressing each week and having shot all four rounds in the 60s at the weekend I think he will be in the thick of it again come Sunday.

Each-way tips:

A runner-up finish at the Australian Open should see Dimitrios Papadatos 50/1 – with UniBet – in buoyant mood this week. The last two years Dimitrios hasn’t played that well missing the cut both times in this championship, but he did have a sixth-place finish here three years ago when his game was in better shape.

I did tip Matthew Millar 66/1 – with UniBet – at the Australian Open a few weeks ago and his Top 5 finish only cemented what has been a great year for the local lad. Matthew currently sits inside the Top 10 on the PGA Tour of Australasia OOM, he has a win and seven Top 10s including a runner-up from thirteen starts coming into this event.

Outside tip:

Anthony Quayle 150/1 – with UniBet – currently sits in third place on the PGA Tour of Australasia OOM and has five Top 25 finishes from his eight starts including a runner-up and two other Top 10 finishes. This will be Anthony’s first time of teeing it up at this event and I expect him to vastly improve on his Australian Open showing.

Longer odds:

Try Jake Higginbottom 150/1 – with Bet365

As always good luck
