There are two courses at Silverado, the North and South, which opened for play in April 1967 when the Silverado Country Club & Resort came into being. The original 18-hole course was redesigned into two 18-hole courses by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, and the North course, which is the track I play, has just been through another redesign, this time by 1976 Open Champion Johnny Miller.

If you have already read my review of Sonoma GC and how that takes course maintenance up another notch from Windsor, then Silverado takes it to a whole new level. I have never seen this many green-keeping staff in one place – and believe me I see them all as I’m first out chasing them round, making it round in two-and-a-half hours. There are at least two if not three or four guys on every hole.

My tips to win:

Another player with a good record here is Kevin Na 28/1 – with Ladbrokes – who lost out in a play-off the first time he teed it up here and followed it up with a Top 10 finish last year, firing two rounds of 66 along the way. Kevin has only ever won once on the PGA Tour and it was in one of these early season events where he seems to play well.

This weeks defending champion is Brendan Steele 33/1 – with Coral – and he will be looking to be a back-to-back champion this week. Brendan has a good record over the Silverado Resort course having not been outside the Top 25 since the tournament moved here in 2014.

A new season a new start for Keegan Bradley 40/1 – with Ladbrokes – who stuttered and started but didn’t quite get back to his best golf, but there were flashes that he isn’t to far away from challenging again. Keegan started the early season well last year missing out on the Top 25 once from his first seven starts and had three Top 10s in that period and will be looking for a similar start to the wraparound season this year.

My each-way tips:

Martin Laird 50/1 – with UniBet – has two Top 10 finishes from his three starts over the Silverado North Course and obviously enjoys playing here. Martin started last seasons wraparound season making the Top 10 in four out of his first eight starts and his final round 66 at the BMW Championship just wasn’t enough to get him through to the Tour Championship. But I am sure he will take the positives from that finish and will be challenging again this week.

Chesson Hadley 66/1 – with 888Sport – is going to be the player to watch, having had two wins and a runner-up to win the web.com tour. Chesson has won on the main tour before taking the 2014 Puerto Rico Open title and he will be looking to make this move to the PGA Tour a permanent one.

My outside tip:

There are not many great outside bets for this event but I have picked Patton Kizzire 150/1 – with Bet365 – who was runner-up here last year but then went on a run of missed cuts ending the season with seven of them but also making the Top 10 five times. When his game is on he can challenge and being back here after last years runner-up finish just may give him the positive energy he needs to challenge again this week.
