The European Tour moves to Italy and the Milano Golf Club, set in the Parco di Monza to the north of the city and not far from the Monza race track. Originally designed by Peter Gannon and Cecil Blandford the course opened for play in 1928.

The course is a relatively flat parkland design that runs through mature trees giving each hole its own space and isolation. In the spring of 1958 the then president Mr. Gianni Albertini commissioned designers Vietti and Buzzi to build the stunning new club house, he also appointed Giulio Cavalsani to design an additional 9 holes giving the club three nines to choose from.

My tips to win:

This weeks defending champion is Francesco Molinari 16/1 – with SportingBet – and no doubt the home support will be right behind the lad from Turin. The Italian Open is part of the Rolex series of events and with that is the large prize fund with a lot of the top European Tour players turning up this week. Francesco comes into this week on the back of a runner-up finish in the PGA Championship and a Top 15 finish at the BMW Championship and will be looking to become another victories defending champion.

Matthew Fitzpatrick 25/1 – with BetFred –
has followed up his win at the European Masters with two Top 15 finishes. The Golf Club Milano is a course that the Yorkshireman seems to enjoy, with third and sixteenth place finishes respectively over the two years. Firing rounds of 65 in both years, he certainly knows how to card a low number on this track and I feel he will be back in the thick of it again this week.

I am going to stick with Tommy Fleetwood 28/1 – with Bwin – this week. The lad from Merseyside must be gutted that he couldn’t follow up his stunning course record 63 – at one of the toughest Open Championships courses – at Carnoustie shooting thirteen shots worse with a third round of 76 – it must have felt like going 15-rounds with Mike Tyson out there. A final round of 69 over the Old Course will have helped, but he will be right back in the thick of it this week with renewed determination.

My each-way tips:

There can’t be many better days than firing a course record 61 but Ross Fisher 33/1 – with Bet365 – achieved that on the Old Course at St Andrews on Sunday and to have that written in the history books will be one of Fishers proudest achievements when he finally puts the clubs away for the final time – and that includes winning a major. Those of you who read last weeks guide know I was thinking about tipping Ross, I knew his ball striking was there but his putting wasn’t. He certainly rediscovered that on Sunday and will be looking to inflict more damage with that wand this weekend.

A win and two other Top 10s from his last four starts Lucas Bjerregaard 66/1 – with Coral – can be forgiven for missing the cut at the weekends Dunhill Links Championship and I am sure the extra days mental rest will probably help in this week preparations. Lucas has two Top 20 finishes here in the last two years one a third place finish two years ago and in his current form I feel he will be in one of the final pairings again come Sunday.

My outside Tips:

There are a couple of good outside tips this week, first is Joakim Lagergren 80/1 – with PaddyPower – who I tipped last week and comes into this week on the back of two Top 12 finishes from his last three starts and had a third place finish here two years ago.

For those looking for longer odds there is Alejandro Canizares 200/1 – with PaddyPower – who comes into this week in average form but he does seem to enjoy playing at the Golf Club Milano and has two Top 25 finishes here one of them being a seventh place finish last year firing all four rounds in the 60s.
