In my humble opinion the view from the 1st tee at Portstewart is one of the best you will ever see from any tee around the world – its immense. The elevated tee sits way above the fairway below and with the Atlantic Ocean to your right. I am sure they stagger the tee times by an extra five minutes, knowing full well everyone will want to have their photo taken.

But this track is not all about the views, it’s a fantastic layout with some tough beautiful holes especially the front nine that runs through the dunes. The back nine runs along the River Bann with more stunning views and the toughest finishing three holes I have ever played. They are all par 4s at 418, 436 and 461 yards respectively and you can retire to the beautifully designed new clubhouse that opened in late 2009 and enjoy more of those stunning views with that well earned drink.

My tips to win:

The obvious favourite this week is going to be Rory McIlroy 7/1 – with SportingBet – and who can forget that majestic 3-wood last year and Rory’s shear determination to win. I am sure that will be in evidence again this week with the home crowed cheering him on.

I don’t normally tip someone the week after they win, but I am going to make an exception this week with Tommy Fleetwood 16/1 – Bet365 – who is on an incredible run of form with two wins, two runners-ups and comes into this week only being outside of the Top 6 once in his last five starts.

I must admit I was surprised to see Justin Rose 16/1 – with SportingBet – teeing it up this week but this is obviously the first leg of his Open Championship build up and he will want to get that missed cut at the US Open out of his system and what better place to start than here in Ireland.

My each-way tips:

This was the start of Shane Lowry’s 33/1 – with Coral – journey into professional golf when he won this event as an amateur golfer back in 2009. Shane has gone on to win on both sides of the Atlantic and has come a long way since that weekend at County Louth. Lowry has been trying his hand on the PGA Tour this year and has four Top 25 finishes so far but has not really challenged but I feel being back here this week may change that.

It will be interesting to see how Paul Dunne 66/1 – with Ladbrokes – fares playing in front of home support, last year he didn’t break into the Top 50 but he comes into this week in a very different frame of mind with two Top 10s so far this year – one being a runner-up. Pauls final round 65 see him storm up the leaderboard at the Open de France and that momentum should see him teeing it up in confident mood this week.

My outside tip:

There are several great outside tips this week, first up is Padriag Harrington 80/1 – with SportingBet – who seems to have run into a bit of form. Padraig is also a past champion here and has a runner-up in the event as well and with the home crowed cheering him on anything is possible. I tipped Jamie Donaldson 100/1 – with 32Red – last week and feel he is on the verge of getting back to his best and he is also a past champion of this event. David Horsey 100/1 – with SportingBet – has three Top 10 finishes from his last six starts and is another player worth a 50p each-way at these odds.

If you want an even bigger outside tip then Kristoffer Broberg 300/1 – with PaddyPower – who missed four cuts from his first four starts this year had a Top 16 finish last week which should see him tee it up this week in confident mood.
As always good luck
