This is the first Greg Norman designed track in Dubai along with sister course Fire at the Jumeirah Golf Estates. The Earth course is a very open layout with generous fairways and large sloping greens, so position is all-important.

Talk about bringing coals to Newcastle, or Sand to Dubai, which is exactly what has happened here. The bleached white sand in the fairway waste areas and bunkers was imported from North Carolina. There really isn’t too much rough to worry about, but the players will have tricky recovery shots off the red wood chips if they do manage to miss these wide fairways.

The most challenging hole is the final hole, with its rock-lined stream meandering up the middle of its 620-yard fairway. The hole gently climbs to the huge and undulating green, a fitting crescendo to this 7706 yards track.

Jumeirah Golf Estates have overseeded the tees, fairways and rough on the Earth course with ryegrass, offering greater contrast and definition to the brilliant white bunkers and barkmulched landscape areas. The course will prove to be a tougher test this year for the players than in 2009 and 2010, with more of a premium being placed on finding the fairways with tee shots.

My tips to win:

It’s hard not to tip Justin Rose 7/1 – with PaddyPower – after his back-to-back European Tour wins and going for three in a row this week. Justin is only 256,737 points behind Tommy Fleetwood in the Race to Dubai and will need to finish no worse than solo fifth place and Tommy not to finish higher to have a chance of taking the Race to Dubai title.

Another back-to-back winner on the European Tour this year is Tyrrell Hatton 16/1 – with Bet365 – who has not finished outside the Top 20 in his last seven starts, Tyrrell is in fifth place on the Race To Dubai but cannot win the series but can move up several places depending on how others finish. Tyrrell was runner-up here last year and finished in the Top 6 the previous year so he obviously enjoys the set up at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

I am going to stick with Victor Dubuisson 25/1 – with SportingBet – this week after his Top 5 finish at the Nedbank Challenge. Victor has played well in previous years over the Earth course and will take extra confidence from his performance last week in South Africa.

My each-way tips:

I am also going to stick with Shane Lowry 33/1 – with 188Bet – who had his third Top 15 finish in his last three starts. Shane should have really put in more of a challenge at the Turkish Open after being in a great position going into the final round. A solid finish at the Nedbank challenge should see him in a positive mood coming back to a course where has several Top 20 finishes which includes a Top 10.

It has been a bit of a stop start season for Rafael Cabrera Bello 40/1 – with Bet365 – who hasn’t really kicked on from a great 2016. Rafa has won on the European Tour earlier this year and has three Top 11s from three starts on the PGA Tours 2018 wraparound season and I expect him to be challenging this week.

My outside tips:

Scott Jamieson 125/1 – with BetFred – comes into this week in great form with two Top 6 finishes from his last three starts, one of which was his runner-up finish at last weekends Nedbank Challenge. Scott has a couple of good tournament finishes over the Earth course and will no doubt be looking forward to playing well again this week.

If you are looking for longer odds take a look at Scott Hend 275/1 – with Bet365 – who had a runner-up finish at the European Masters a couple of months ago and although this is the first time he is teeing it up at this event he is a multiple winner on both the European and Asian Tours.
