Set amongst the Bukit Kiara hillside some 5 miles from the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the TPC Kuala Kumper – formally known as the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club – was originally designed by Robin Nelson in 1991. Since then the course has gone through a recent redesign which was undertaken by Parslow and Associates who extensively reconstructed the layout over a period of eighteen months.

The new West Course reopened for play in October 2008 with the East course opening two years later in 2010. It’s a golf course that rewards the shot-maker and gives fantastic views of the hole you are playing and the surrounding scenery it sits in. The undulating fairways offer plenty of shot options into the greens and where water comes into play on thirteen of the eighteen holes, with an additional lake on the ninth hole.




My tips to win:

Its hard not to go with Justin Thomas 9/2 – with SportingBet – who is not only the man in form at the moment and FedEx Cup winner, he is also the defending champion and trying to make it three wins on the bounce in this event. Justin won four times on the PGA Tour last year and if you count his win here in the wraparound season it’s five and he will be in determined mood to make it three in a row this week.

Last years runner up was Hideki Matsuyama 9/1 – with Bet365 – who also had a Top 5 finish in this event the year before. Hideki shot all four rounds in the 60s last year and had a great start to the wraparound season winning four times – if you include the Hero World Challenge – and had three runner-up finishes including his one here last year. When winning the WGC Bridgestone Matsuyama finished in the Top 5 three times from four starts, he obviously couldn’t maintain that level but when he if firing on all cylinders he is unstoppable.

Anirban Lahiri 30/1 – with PaddyPower – has won a European Tour event on this track and has finished inside the Top 25 over the last two years one a third place last year and only for a final round 72 would have been right in the thick of it. Anirban had eight missed cuts last year but also made the Top 25 seven times, one of which was his runner-up finish at the Memorial Tournament and he ended his season well with a Top 10 at the BMW Championship firing a final round 66. Lahiri also had a Top 10 on the European Tour at the Maybank Championship, which is also held in Malaysia.

My each-way tips:

I am going to stick with Kevin Na 35/1 – with PaddyPower – this week, even though his final round 77 see him crash down the leaderboard last week at the Safeway Open. As many of you will know Kevin has a lot of mental strength coming back from basically freezing over the ball at the Players Championship a few years ago. Know doubt he will be able to put that final round behind him, especially coming back to a course where he has had a runner-up a third place and another Top 10.

Another player who has performed well on the TPC Kuala Lumpur course in European Tour events is Charl Schwartzel 40/1 – with StanJames – who has three Top 6 finishes and an eleventh place from his four starts in the Malaysian Open. Charl has a lot to prove after his abysmal performance at the Presidents Cup where the Masters champion basically bottled it along with a lot of other players on the International team, to be fair he won his individual match play match but by then the cup had already been won.

My outside tips:

Another players I am sticking with this week is Keegan Bradley 80/1 – with Ladbrokes – who missed the cut at last weeks Safeway Open. Keegan has teed it up here three times making the Top 10 twice including his sixth place finish here last year.

For those looking for longer odds there is SSP Chawrasia 500/1 – with StanJames – and Richard T Lee 500/1 – with Bet365 – who have both played well in the European Tours Malaysia Open which is played on the same course SSP has three Top 20 finishes and defended his Indian Open earlier this year and Richard T has teed it up here twice finishing inside the Top 20 both times with the his last finish being a fifth place. Richard won the Shinhan Donghae Open a couple of weeks ago on the Asian Tour so should be in confident mood.
