After its resurrection at Woburn, followed by The Grove the British Masters moves to another new venue. Close House opened for play in 2011, the Lee Westwood Championship Colt course sits in 200 acres of beautiful Northumberland countryside. Designed by Scott Macpherson and named after the great Harry Colt, the venue was voted one of the top 100 courses in the UK a one year after opening, and is the only course in the North East to hold that accolade.

The Journal’s Tim Taylor said about the course, “If Scott Macpherson is not the 21st century's re-incarnation of Harry Colt, then I don’t know who is. A drop dead gorgeous course and you can see from the way Macpherson has subtly set his jewel into the breath-taking countryside alongside Hadrian’s Wall, that he is a student of Colt’s gentle way of doing things.”

My tips to win:

It has been a wonderful year for Sergio Garcia 10/1 – with SportingBet – finally picking up the major championship his golf game so richly deserved and he topped it off by getting married. Sergio has not really challenged since donning the green jacket in April, but with a twelfth and tenth place finishes in this last two starts on the PGA Tour, I expect him to be challenging this week.

This weeks defending champion is Alex Noren 16/1 – with UniBet – and he will be looking to put up a strong defence of his title. Alex has played well in England this year, who can forget his stunning final round 62 at the BMW PGA Championship to win that event and then a final round 67 at Royal Birkdale a couple of months later helped him achieve a sixth place finish at The Open.

Another previous champion of this event is Matthew Fitzpatrick 22/1 – with Bet365 – and he comes into this week after taking the European Masters title three weeks ago at Crans-sur-Sierre GC winning a dramatic play-off. I did tip him that week stating that with the big tournaments coming up I expected him to start challenging again and I feel he will be in the thick of it again this week.

My each-way tips:

Fellow Englishman Tyrrell Hatton 33/1 – with Coral – also performed well at the European Masters with his final round 66 seeing him take third place. Tyrrell started the year so well on the desert swing of the European Tour and followed that up with a Top 10 at the WGC in Mexico, but then just seem to totally lose all confidence in his golf game. I think that third place finish would have done a lot for Hatton’s confidence and he will be in positive mood this week and with the defence of his Dunhill title coming up next week he will want to put in a strong performance this week.

I am going to stick with George Coetzee 50/1 – with Ladbrokes – this week and he will be disappointed with his final round 71 at the Portugal Masters that see him slide out of contention. Lucas Bjerregaard was my outside tip last week and I did feel George would have two much experience in that final pairing with the youngster, how wrong I was, but I expect the South African to come back strongly this week.

My outside tips:

There are two good outside bets this week, first up is Ashun Wu 125/1 – with UniBet – who comes into this week on the back of three Top 10 finishes from six starts and Matt Wallace 125/1 – with 10Bet – who has already won his maiden tour event this year and will be looking forward to playing in front of a partisan crowed and with a Top 10 two weeks ago in Holland his golf game is in great shape.

For those looking for longer odds try Joël Stalter 200/1 – with 32Red – who has a third and twelfth place finishes from his last two starts.
