The Andalucia Masters is making a comeback with the backing of Sergio Garcia’s Foundation and teeing up at Europe’s very own “Augusta”, the Robert Trent Jones designed Valderrama.

Originally known as Los Aves sitting above the Andalucian village of Sotogrande, billionaire Jaime Ortiz-Patino purchased the course and asked Trent Jones to come back out and reshape the course in 1985. The course has hosted the Volvo Masters but is most notably remembered for Seve’s captaining of the 1997 Ryder Cup matches.

The 17th hole is the most memorable hole from those Ryder Cup matches and became the perfect risk and reward hole. Named Los Gabiones it was once just a long par five before Trent Jones' redesign and by adding the water feature just in front of the green, it became a must watch hole during the 1997 matches.

In June 2014 King Juan Carlos of Spain granted Valderrama the Royal title, the club is now known as Real Club Valderrama.

My tips to win:

In theory Sergio Garcia 11/2 – with SportingBet – is the defending champion this week having won the title the last time it was played in 2011 and I am sure that fact has not been lost on The Masters Champion. Garcia couldn’t be in a happier place not only finally capturing that elusive major, but getting married and announcing that he is about to become a father, there probably could not be a better way to round off the year than defending this title in front of family and friends.

To say Søren Kjeldsen 18/1 – BetFred – enjoys playing at Real Club Valderrama would be a slight understatement, apart from winning the Volvo Masters here in 2008 he has two runners-up and a Top 5 in various other events held over the course. Søren has been playing regularly on the PGA Tour this year but has rarely captured his European Tour form over recent months and I am sure he will be looking forward to teeing it up on a course he not only enjoys playing but has had some great results on.

It has been a frustrating year for Joost Luiten 25/1 – with BetFred – he just couldn’t seem to get a win last year and had back-to-back runners-up finishes as well as four Top 8s from nine starts and finally won months later and although Joost form hasn’t been as good results wise he just can’t seem to put four good rounds together. Luiten has played some solid golf over the last couple of weeks and just needs that one low round to be right in the thick of it. One of those back-to-back runners-up finishes was on this course last year and maybe those positive vibes from being back here just may get him over the line this week.

My each-way tips:

I am going to stick with one of last weeks tips in Alejandro Canizares 50/1 – with Ladbrokes – who I hope will take heart from rounds of 65 and 66 at last weeks Italian Open. Alejandro has had a couple of Top 12s on this track and I feel knowing he’s in good form coming back to a course he has played well on will see him challenging this week.

This will be the third week I have decided to go with Joakim Lagergren 80/1 – with StanJames and although his final round 70 see him slide out of contention and down the leaderboard at the Italian Open at the weekend, I just feel he is not too far away from putting four good rounds together.

My outside tip:

Normally when Mikko Korhonen 100/1 – with SportingBet – misses a cut he bounces back well – his missed cut at the BMW PGA Championship see him take the runner-up spot at the Lyoness Open – and I am hoping that is the case this week after the Fin missed the cut at last weeks Italian Open.

Looking for longer odds how about Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano 175/1 – Bet365 – It has not been a good year for the Spaniard with twelve missed cuts from twenty-two starts and only one Top 25, but being back on home soil surrounded by friends and family he may just be able to relax and enjoy his golf again.
