This week's European Tour pitches up on the beautiful island of Mauritius for the co sanctioned event with the Asian Tour, the AfrAsian Mauritius Open. The inaugural tournament was first played in 1994 and won by Michael McLean.

This year’s event is played on the Heritage Golf Club course which was designed by South African, Peter Matkovitch. The 7,106 yard course first opened for play in 2005. The Citronniers and St Martin rivers cross the wide undulating fairways at unexpected points.

The course itself is carved through a sugar cane plantation and sits between volcanic mountains and the beautiful crystal clear blue sea, with plenty of bunkers and water hazards to negotiate. Although this will be a strategic challenge for the professional golfers this week it’s also a course that holidaymakers of the island enjoy playing from its five different teeing options.

My tips to win:

When Nicolas Colsaerts 25/1 – Ladbrokes – played in this event last year he was in the middle of a slump, but a Top 5 finish in this tournament – although on a different course – seems to have been the catalyst for him getting back to playing some of his better golf and Nicolas finished the year challenging again. I think a year on and being back here will see him in the thick of it again this week.

George Coetzee 28/1 – with Coral – won this tournaments inaugural event and I am sure like Colsaerts being back here will only bring back positive memories of that victory. George had several Top 10s at the backend of last season but finished without a win and will be looking to put that right this week.

Another player that has been through a bad run of form is Jamie Donaldson 33/1 – with SportingBet – who I tipped last week and will be sticking with this week. Jamie finished last season with a Top 5 and started the wraparound season with a Top 25 last week and I feel he will be challenging again this week. Jamie won this event in 2008 before it was reinstated into the tour schedule in 2015.

My each-way tips:

I must say I am surprised that Scott Hend 45/1 – with Bet365 – is playing in this event and not the Australian PGA Championship and to that end I think he feels he has a very good chance of doing well here. Scott had a Top 5 finish in the inaugural tournament, which was held over the Heritage Golf Club course and these are great odds for someone who feels he is going to be right in the thick of it come Sunday.

SSP Chawrasia 80/1 – with SkyBet – comes into this week on the back of a Top 10 finish at the UBS Hong Kong Open, it could have been a lot better if his putter had behaved, as he was stripping his irons into the green but a final round 72 see him slide down the leaderboard. SSP won the Indian Open earlier this year making it back-to-back wins and he always seems to play well on his home continent.

My outside tips:

This is a tournament that Oliver Bekker 125/1 – with SportingBet – seems to enjoy playing in, he has teed it up in this event twice and has had two Top 20 finishes and his eighth place in the inaugural event was over the Heritage course and contained an opening round of 66. Bekker currently sits on top of the Sunshine Tours OOM and should come into this week in confident mood.

Slightly longer odds is Estanislao Goya 150/1 – with SportingBet – he is another player who played well in this event last year. Although this years event is back on the Heritage Course I think these are good odds for the Argentinian who spent last year back on the Challenge Tour and he will be looking to get his wraparound season off to a good start.
