This week sees the return of the World Golf Championship (WGC) at one of the most iconic golf courses on the US Tour, The Firestone Country Club, in Akron, Ohio has a long history having hosted PGA Tour events for over five decades. The South Course with its great views of the Firestone water tower provides a challenging, test.

Harvey Firestone, founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, established the Firestone Country Club in the late 1920s as a park for his employees. Bert Way designed the original layout back in 1929, it has since had a redesign by Robert Trent Jones in 1960. It’s a tough track at 7,400 yards with two halves of 35 making a par 70.

Tiger Woods has won this event an incredible seven times since is original inception as the WGC NEC Invitational back in 1999. The course it’s self seems to have a marmite effect on visiting golfers, the handicapped golfer seems to find the layout tedious with many of the holes running long parallel to each other, with its narrow tree lined fairways. While on the other hand the professionals seem to find it an honest and demanding test of their abilities.

My tips to win:

With his back injury hopefully behind him Justin Rose 25/1 – with PaddyPower – will be back at Firestone and after a weeks rest – hopefully the missed cut at the US Open Championship has giving him some extra time to recuperate and added time working on his golf game. Justin has a very good record in this event with a runner-up finish, he has also only been outside the Top 20 once since 2010 with three of those being Top 5 places and I expect him to be challenging again this week.

I did tip Adam Scott 25/1 – with SportingBet – at the US Open Championship where he was challenging up until the final day. The three weeks where Scott followed up a runner-up finish with consecutive wins, have since seen the Australian have four Top 20s from seven starts which shows some very consistent golf. Adam is a past champion here and has three other Top 10s and is someone who I feel will be in the thick of it come Sunday.

Bubba Watson 25/1 – with Coral – was runner-up here last year and has three other Top 25s since 2010 over the South Course at the Firestone CC. Bubba has a win already this year and was runner-up at one of this years other WGC events and although his game has not been in great shape since that runner-up finish, I think being back here with no cut, will see the Floridian challenging again this week.

My each-way tip:

It has not taken Jim Furyk 33/1 – with Coral – long to get back into the swing of things after his injury and he will be more than happy with his runner-up finish at the US Open Championship. After another couple of days rest and the confidence boost that he would have got from that finish, I expect him to do well again this week, on a course that has seen him have two runner-up finishes.

It will be interesting to see how defending champion Shane Lowry 40/1 – with Bet365 – reacts after his final round 76 at the US Open, will he take the positives and see his runner-up finish as a step forward challenging for another major championship or will he look at that final round as a missed opportunity. I feel if he takes the positives he will do well here and we will see how mentally tough he is, but tournament will only add to the doubts.

My outside tip:

It has been an interesting first season on the PGA Tour for Smylie Kaufman 150/1 – with StanJames – winning the second event of the wraparound season has set him up nicely for the next couple of years for his playing schedule, There has also been six missed cuts, but that has been balanced by that win and four other Top 10s – one of those being an eighth place finish at the WGC Cadillac Championship. The odds reflect the lad from Alabama’s rollercoaster year, but I think he could be worth a little punt after his Top 10 finish last weekend.

As always good luck
