The Gary Player Country Club hosts the event, the course is one of the major attractions at the once infamous Sun City resort in the north west region of South Africa. Sun City has two golf courses, the Lost City course which features crocodiles in one of its ponds, and the Gary Player Country club which has consistently been rated as the number one or two course in South Africa.

The fairways consist of a lush kikuyu and are complemented by immaculate bent-grass greens. Designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirkby and named after Player in celebration of his status as South Africa's greatest golfer, this par 72 track measures 7,655 yards from the championship tees. It is one of the longest golf courses in the world.

The Kikuyu-grassed fairways and bent grass greens contrast magnificently with the more barren thorn-scrub and aloe-covered hillsides through which the parkland course meanders. The fairways are wide but are bordered by tough kikuyu rough and untended African bushveld which, together with the tricky greens are the course's main defences.

Water comes into play on five holes, most famously on the par-five 9th with its island green, which is surrounded by waterfalls and artificial rocks. There are natural amphitheatres at the 9th and 18th holes, as well as several other vantage points around the course, giving thousands of spectators great views of the course as well as the players.

My tips to win:

Matthew Fitzpatrick 16/1 – with Bet365 – seems to have been challenging every time he has teed it up since the summer and finally captured his first professional title at the British Masters in October. Since then Matthew has only been outside the Top 15 once in five starts and has two Top 5 finishes in that run, so I expect to see him challenging again this week.

Another player that has stamped his mark on 2015 has been Andy Sullivan 22/1 – with BetBright – who has three tournament wins, a runners-up at last week's World Tour Championship and seven other Top 20s – three of which are Top 10s. I think we will see Andy challenging at the majors and WGC events next year but I can see him bagging one more win before the year is out.

Thongchai Jaidee 33/1 – with Coral – has played in this event the last two years and finished inside the Top 10 both times. Thongchai has finished the year in great form winning one event and has three other Top 15s including a third place finish at the BMW Masters a few weeks ago so I expect him to be challenging again this week.

Outside tip:

There are several bookies offering Thomas Aiken 100/1 – with Bet365 – and being a home-grown player and someone who seems to enjoy playing in front of his home support, I think Thomas could be worth a little 50p each-way bet this week.
