This is the final tournament of the season before the European Tour moves into its “Final Series” and the Tour moves back to Asia and pitches up at the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club. It has been renamed the Hong Kong Golf Club after dropping the Royal back in 1997.

The club was founded in May 1889. Permission was obtained to play at Happy Valley, an area that was also used for football, polo, hockey and military parades, so the golfers had to take their turn. By 1891 membership had boomed so a small shed was built where refreshments were served. Due to the "crowded conditions" it meant that from 1896 ladies were only permitted to play golf on a restricted basis.

As the membership grew the Captain and Club officials were forced to find a new location. In September 1898, land at Deep Water Bay was found and the land was leased with the agreement of the Government and a clubhouse was built in the same year. In 1903 Happy Valley was turned over exclusively to the Golf Club, except for Wednesdays and Saturdays when soccer and cricket were played. Ladies were only allowed to play on Sundays.

In 1911 negotiations took place with the Government and local farmers to secure sufficient land in Fanling to build a full 18 holes. The Old Course opened for play at the end of 1911. Additional land was acquired in the late 1920's for the New Course, which opened in November 1931. A third course, the Eden was added in 1970.

My tips to win:

I did tip Justin Rose 6/1 – with Bet365 – at last weeks Frys.com Open where the Englishman finished just outside the Top 5 in sixth place, his final round 72 seeing him slip out of contention. But as stated last week that Top 6 finish makes it his seventh from eleven starts and with that sort of consistency its hard to not pick Justin while he is on this current run of form.

Dustin Johnson 9/1 – with PaddyPower – comes into this week after a rest and winning three from four matches at the Presidents Cup – he also has four Top 10 finishes from his last five starts on the PGA Tour. This year could have been so different for Dustin in the Majors, but he seems to be able to shrug that disappointment off and continue to challenge in tournaments most weeks and I am sure it will be no different this week.

It was a shame Miguel Angel Jimenez 28/1 – with BetVictor – couldn’t make it three wins in a row at the Hong Kong Open last year, but his affinity with this course and tournament can not be underestimated and you can be sure the affable Spaniard will be up there challenging again this week.

My each-way tips:

Another player that loves playing over the Hong Kong GC track is Australian Marcus Fraser 33/1 – with Ladbrokes – who has only been outside the Top 11 once in his six starts here. Marcus should come into this week in confident mood taking a weeks break after his Top 5 finish at the British Masters a couple of weeks ago and being back on a course he obviously enjoys, I expect to see him challenging again this week.

Someone I have been watching over the last couple of weeks is the Danish lad Lucas Bjerregaard 55/1 – with StanJames – who seems to be coming into form at the backend of the season. Lucas had his third Top 10 finish from his last five starts at last weeks Portugal Masters and coming back to a track where he had a Top 5 last year, I think we will see him challenging again this week.

My Outside tip:

It has not been a great year for Prom Meesawat 125/1 – with StanJames – and choosing an outside tip this week has proved difficult as no one has really stuck out, the reason I am going for Prom over David Lipsky 70/1 – with BetFred, David Drysdale 100/1 – with Bet365 – and Craig Lee 150/1 – with Bet365 – was because of Meesawat’s storming finish here two years ago when he shot a final round 65 to force his way into the play-off – he also had a Top 20 here last year – and I think his worth a little quid each-way at these odds.
