This week sees the start of the FedEx Cup Tour Championship and The Barclays goes back to the Donald Ross designed Plainfield Country Club – the event was last held here in 2011, when it got off to a shaky start when an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale struck northern Virginia and was felt by players practising on the Tuesday.

Founded in 1890 Plainfield Country Club was originally known as the Hillside Tennis Club, the name changed to Plainfield Country Club in 1904, with the Donald Ross designed course opening for play 17 years later in 1921.

Land was acquired in the 1930s, which allowed Plainfield CC to expand with the construction of new holes from the 13th through to the 15th. Some felt these holes failed to blend with the original course design. Rectifying this problem was part of Gil Hanse design teams remit when he was commission to undertake a complete restoration in 2000.

Plainfield is a classic course with gently rolling hills, mature trees, the bunkering is well placed and the greens have plenty of movement and contours in them. The Gil Hanse renovations and thinning of the trees has revealed the true brilliance of this Donald Ross design.

My tips to win

I am sure Jordan Spieth 6/1 – with Ladbrokes – will want to add the FedEx Cup title to his two majors this year and with just missing out on taking his third major at the USPGA Championship, you can bet the Texan will come into this week in determined mood and will want to cement his world number one ranking. Jordan has only been outside the Top 3 twice from his last eight starts, which is a phenomenal record and with four wins so far this year, you can be sure he will be adding to that tally over the coming weeks.

Rickie Fowler 28/1 – with Coral – is another player that seems to do well at this event and after missing two cuts after winning the Players Championship he seems to have got his game back on track, and although he didn’t do that well at the USPGA Championship, he did have a runners-up and a Top 10 going into that week and I think we will see Rickie in one of the final pairings come Sunday.

One player that seems to enjoy playing in this event is Matt Kuchar 35/1 – Bet365 – and although it's at a new venue this year, I am sure we will see the affable Floridian in the thick of it again this week. Kooch is in a good vain of form at the moment with four Top 25 finishes from his last five starts, two of those Top 10s, one at a tough Whistling Straits for the PGA Championship.

My each-way tips:

I am going to stick with Brandt Snedeker 40/1 – with Bet365 – this week even after his final round meltdown at last week's Wyndham Championship, I am just going to put that down as a one off as he has been playing well with four Top 10s from his last eight events. Brandt has also played well in this event over the years with two Top 5 on the spin – although he does have a couple of missed cuts as well – but I think we will see him back challenging this week.

Another player that should come into this week full of confidence is Paul Casey 41/1 – 10Bet – who has his second Top 5 finish from his last six starts. Paul’s game is all about confidence and as I have said before it can take one bad break to get to him and his head goes for the rest of the event, but when he is playing well he can certainly hold his own with the best in the world.

My outside tip:

I think these are great odds for Danny Lee 80/1 – with Bet365 – Danny has only been outside the Top 6 twice in his last six starts which includes a win at The Greenbrier Classic. Although he didn’t perform that well at the USPGA Championship, I think after a couple of weeks rest he will be back competing again this week. It's also a bit hard to discard someone who sits number one on the tour stats in most birdies and tenth in eagles.
