The Portugal Masters has been held on the Victoria course since 2007 with Steve Webster winning its inaugural event. Spain’s Alvaro Quiros shot a final round of 68 to win the 2008 title by three shots ahead of Scotland’s Paul Lawrie. Lee Westwood and Richard Green lifted the title in 2009 and 2010 and 20-year-old Tom Lewis, won the 2011 Portugal Masters. Lewis birdied five of the last seven holes to claim his maiden title in only his third professional start. Shane Lowry is the current champion and will be defending his title this week.

Designed by Arnold Palmer the Oceanico Victoria Course is a beautifully manicured track that weighs in at 7,227-yards. The club is situated in the Golf-Mekka Vilamoura area. The terrain is flat but don’t let that put you off its a breathtaking design. Each hole has 5 teeing options and the course features are the many lakes and waterfalls as well as the strategically placed bunkers.

My tips to win:

Bernd Wiesberger 12/1 – with Ladbrokes – has a good record here with two Top 5 finishes before last years tournament was reduced to 36-holes. Bernd comes into this week on the back of his Top 5 finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links championship and has a win, two runner-up and three other Top 6 finishes so far this year and will know doubt be one of the favourites this week.

I am going to stick with Tommy Fleetwood 22/1 – with Coral – again this week, he certainly left his charge late at the British Masters but his final round 65 see him get into the Top 15, Tommy’s second Top 15 finish in the last two weeks. It has not been the year I think Fleetwood thought it would be this year with only four Top 10 finishes and no wins, but as we get to the business end of the season I expect him to be challenging more and that 65 could be the sign of things to come.

Someone who has hit top form at the right time is Søren Kjeldsen 20/1 – with BetVictor – who has two runner-up and two Top 10s from his last six starts, Søren also has a win and another runner-up finish to his name so far this year. Kjeldsen doesn’t have a good record at the Portugal Master, but its hard to ignore someone who comes into this week in such confident mood and with his golf game in great shape.

My each-way tips:

Another player I am going to stick with this week – especially with his surge up the leaderboard on the final two days at the British Masters – is Tyrrell Hatton 40/1 – with Bet365. Tyrrell has had 10 Top 25 finishes this year with five of those being Top 10s and after watching Matthew Fitzpatrick take his first European Tour title last week, I don’t think it will be long before the lad from High Wycombe joins him in being another first time winner on the tour this year.

Romain Wattel 45/1 – with PaddyPower – threw away a great chance of breaking his European Tour duck at last weeks British Masters, his final round 73 see him slide out of the Top 5 and just make it inside the Top 25 places. Its been a strange year for the Frenchman who has had only four Top 10 finishes, but that really doesn’t tell the full story of his golf game, his final round seems to let him down every time he is in contention, shooting only one final round in the 60s. Saying that this is a course he likes so I am going for him being in contention again this week.

My outside Tip:

What a rollercoaster season it has been for Rafa Cabrera-Bello 66/1 – with Bet365 – and just when you think he has everything under control and will start challenging again, he goes and misses three cuts on the bounce including last weeks British Masters. But the Spaniard is a great talent and does have a runner-up finish and three other Top 7 placing’s in what has been a bad year for him. Rafa does seem to enjoy playing at the Oceånico Victoria GC and has a runner-up finish here and I think these are good odds on the Spaniard.
