The quest to make the 2016 European Ryder Cup team begins this week in Russia and Skolkovo Golf Club has the honour of being the first counting event. The club is based in Moscow’s very own “Silicon Valley” and owned by one of Roman Abramovich companies.

The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course opened for play in 2014 and is spread over 100 hectares of lush parkland with poplar and birch trees with six lakes – the largest of which is over 2 hectares – cascading waterfalls and 113 bunkers.

My tips to win:

I still feel David Horsey 14/1 – with Bet365 – should come into this week in confidant mood even though he missed the cut at last weeks Czech Masters after winning the week before in Denmark. I am not sure what happens but it does seem to affect all but the very best golfers that way. David is the defending champion this week and now he has got that bad tournament out of the way I expect him to put up a solid defence this week.

Michael Hoey 18/1 – with StanJames – won this event two years ago and with two solid tournaments in the last couple of weeks taking his tally of Top 25 finishes to five for the year. This year’s tournament is on a different course, but I think he will be looking forward to playing in Russia again this year and Michael’s Top 5 finish at the Paul Lawrie Match Play has given the Northern Irishman a much needed confidence boost.

Another player who has started to play well in recent weeks is Robert Dinnwiddie 22/1 – with StanJames – who has had three Top 11 finishes in his last three starts and his Top 5 finish at last weekends Czech Master see him firing three rounds in the 60s. Robert is still waiting to win on the European Tour, it has been a long wait, but if he is ever going to break that duck, – in his current vain of form and a weak field – he is not going to have a better chance to take the bull by the horns.

My each-way tips:

Damien McGrane 50/1 – with Bet365 – lost out in a play-off in this event last year, but it was his final round 66 that impressed me playing himself up the leaderboard, it was the best round of the final day and only one other player matched it – this years event maybe on a different track, but players don’t forget things like that and he will take a lot of energy from that this week. Damien also comes into this week on the back of a Top 10 finish at last weeks Czech Masters his best finish of the year and that combination is why I am tipping him to do well this week.

David Drysdale 55/1 – with Bet365 – is another player that seems to be pulling his season around and coming into a week with a weakened field I think the Scot will fancy his chances. After a very up and down season Drysdale has managed five solid tournaments on the bounce giving himself a few good pay days and with the progression he has been making slowly moving up the leaderboards I think we may well see him challenging here this week.

My outside tip:

Sam Hutsby 80/1 – with Bet365 – I must admit I was surprised to see Sam this far down the betting odds after getting off to such a good start at last weeks Czech Masters when he opened up with a 66, but he did gradually score worse each round and slowly slide down the leaderboard. Hutsby has missed a lot of cuts this year but his recent from has seen him make four consecutive cuts and culminated in his best finish of the season last week. I am banking on his confidence gradually growing because he certainly has the ability to win on the European Tour.
