Founded in 1910, Kennemer Golf & Country Club is located at Zandvoort, the club moved to its current location in 1927, when Harry Colt was commissioned to lay out the course amongst the towering sand dunes where Colt has produced one of his finest designs.

In 1985, Frank Pennink was asked to design nine new holes, giving Kennemer 27 holes of great golf. The three nines are know by two names!! The A course – Van Hengel (named after the Steven van Hengel who was a member and an eminent figure in Dutch golf), the B course – Pennink and the C nine – Colt.

The course the Dutch KLM Open will be played on this week will be a composite course using the A nine followed by holes 1, 2 and 3 of the B nine, then holes 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the C nine.

If you didn’t know where you were, you would think you were standing on a classic links course in Scotland or England with its undulating ground, dunes, gorse and the odd pine tree. It’s also the course where Seve Ballesteros won his first professional golf tournament in 1976 and fellow Spaniard and great friend, José Maria Olazábal followed suit in 1989 by winning the Dutch Open here.

My tips to win

It has not been a great year for Joost Luiten 22/1 – with Bet365 – with trying to play on both sides of the Atlantic, but when he opened up with an 80 at the USPGA Championship, I think taking a couple of weeks out has been the right thing to do. Joost is not only a past champion here, two years ago he had a runner-up finish while still learning his trade on the Challenge tour. I think a few weeks off working on his game and being on a course where he has won before - and in front of a home crowd will see Luiten in the thick of it again come Sunday.

Tyrell Hatton 33/1 – with SportingBet – is another player who has had a couple of weeks off after his Top 25 finish in the USPGA Championship, which followed on from two Top 5 finishes. It has been a great year for the lad from High Wycombe, in only his second year on the European Tour after graduating from the Challenge Tour. Tyrell has had nine Top 25 finishes from nineteen starts and I don’t think he is that far off taking his first European title.

It was the first time I had tipped Matthew Fitzpatrick 35/1 – SportingBet – at the Czech Masters and the young Yorkshireman finished in the money places, making it his fourth Top 5 finish of the year. It has been a big learning curve for Matthew – although he did make the Top 5 in his second professional event, it took another seven tournaments before he really started to settle down and I think he will be challenging again this week.

My each-way tips:

I will be sticking with David Horsey 50/1 – with Bet365 – this week who seems to be on a bit of a roll, and with a win and another Top 5 finish in the last three weeks, it really seems David has found a key to his game. In this vain of form and with a Top 10 finish in this event on this track two years ago, at these odds I think it’s hard to leave him.

Another player that seems to enjoy playing over the Kennemer G&CC links layout is Richie Ramsay 40/1 – Ladbrokes – no surprise really as being a Scot Richie learned his game on links courses – and this Harry Colt classic is a beautiful links track. Ramsay shot back-to-back 65s here last year only to be let down by his final round 72 which saw him slide out of the runner-up spot, but he still made the Top 10. Ramsay has already won on tour this year and has had four other Top 10 finishes, I think we will see him in the thick of it again this week.

My outside tip:

My outside tip is going to be Oliver Fisher 200/1 – with Coral – who is another player that has a good record over the Kennemer G&CC links. Oliver has had two Top 25 finishes here over the last two years. Fisher has had a couple of solid performances over the last two weeks and coming back to a track he obviously enjoys playing he has got to be worth a 50p each-way bet.
