There are two courses at Silverado, the North and South, which opened for play in April 1967 when the Silverado Country Club & Resort came into being. The original 18-hole course was redesigned into two 18-hole courses by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, and the North course, which is the track I play, has just been through another redesign, this time by 1976 Open Champion Johnny Miller.

If you have already read my review of Sonoma GC and how that takes course maintenance up another notch from Windsor, then Silverado takes it to a whole new level. I have never seen this many green-keeping staff in one place – and believe me I see them all as I’m first out chasing them round, making it round in two-and-a-half hours. There are at least two if not three or four guys on every hole.

My tips to win:

Having played the Silveradoo course I do think it's a track that Justin Rose 10/1 – with Coral – will enjoy playing, as it’s very reminiscent of a Hertfordshire course – see full review and video here. Justin comes into this week on the back of his runner-up finish at the Tour Championship and a run of tournaments finishes that includes a win, two other runners-ups– one at The Masters – and four other Top 6 finishes from his last fourteen starts – and he has only been outside the Top 17 three times in that run. Consistency seems to be a byword in Rose’s game at the moment and I expect to see him right up there again this week.

Brooks Koepka 18/1 – with 888Sport had a strange end to the FedEx Cup tournaments after playing so well leading up to those events with three Top 6 finishes on the spin, Brooks then went and missed two cuts and finished the Tour Championship itself in eighteenth place. Like most people I think this is going to be a big year for Koepka and I think he will be right in there challenging for major championships. He will want to get off to a flying start this week on a course he done well on last year, I expect him to be in one of the final pairings come Sunday.

Another player who done well on the Silveradoo track last year was Hideki Matsuyama 18/1 – with Coral – finishing in the Top 10 and it looks like Hideki enjoys playing in this event as he had a Top 5 finish the year before when the event was played at the CordeValle Golf Club. Matsuyama finished the season well in the FedEx Cup play-offs ending three out of the four events inside the Top 15 and he is another player I expect to do well this week.

My each-way tips:

It turned out to be a strange season for Kevin Na 45/1 – with SportingBet – who seemed to promise so much and just fade at the end of events. Looking back over his stats Kevin only shot five final rounds in the 60s from twenty-seven starts, which invariably see him slide out of contention on the Sunday. I am sure its something his coaching staff will have been talking to him about and working on, so I do expect that to start to change over the coming season.

On player who should come into this week with a spring in his step is Steven Bowditch 70/1 – with Bet365 – after beating Jimmy Walker in his Presidents Cup singles match. It’s also a course that he played well on last year firing a final round 67 that see him take the runners-up spot. Steven had a bit of a mixed bag in the FedEx Cup Play-offs, but managed two Top 15 places and I expect to see him in the thick of it again this week.

My outside Tip

Bryce Molder 125/1 – with 888Sport – enjoyed this event when it was held at CordeValle Golf Club, where he had a win and another Top 15 finish, but it turns out that it's the tournament he enjoys as he had a Top 3 in the event last year even though the tournament had moved to the Silveradoo Golf Club. Bryce had an up and down end to the season, but I think there was enough there to think that he will do well in what seems to be like his favourite event of the season.
