| Set amongst the Bukit Kiara hillside some 5 miles from the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club was originally designed by Robin Nelson in 1991. Since then the course has gone through a recent redesign which was undertaken by Parslow and Associates who extensively reconstructed the layout over a period of eighteen months.
The new West Course reopened for play in October 2008 with the East course opening two years later in 2010.
It’s a golf course that rewards the shot-maker and gives fantastic views of the hole you are playing and the surrounding scenery it sits in. The undulating fairways offer plenty of shot options into the greens and where water comes into play on thirteen of the eighteen holes, with an additional lake on the ninth hole.
My tips to win:
I am going to stick with Kevin Na 14/1 with Bet365 for the third tournament in succession and the lad from Seoul, South Korea hasnt let us down with two runner-up finishes. His odds have obviously plummeted since we tipped him at 45/1 at the Frys and 28/1 at the Shriners, but I still think he is worth a punt coming back to a track where he had a runner-up finish last year.
Another player turning up to play on a course he seems to enjoy is Sergio Garcia 18/1 with SportingBet. Sergio has not played in a competitive tournament since the BMW Championship at the end of September. Garcia seems to be able to take a month off to chill out and enjoy life but then still manage to turn up at a tournament and not only compete but also challenge. Sergio was joint runner-up here last year and was just outside the Top 10 the year before and I expect to see him challenging again this week.
Ryan Moore 22/1 with StanJames will be looking to make it three in a row this week a feat that has only been accomplished twenty-six times in the history of the PGA Tour and no matter what form someone is in, when a record like that is on the line you can expect them to step up and try and make it happen. It has been a bit of a rollercoaster couple of months for the lad from Tacoma, Washington, with two missed cuts and two Top 10s from his last six starts, but I expect Ryan to pull out all the stops to become part of that illustrious group.
My each-way tips
This is a course that Anirban Lahiri 25/1 with Ladbrokes enjoys playing both on the European and PGA Tours the Kuala Lumper G&CC is used for the Maybank Malaysian Open on the European Tour Anirban not only comes into this week on the back of a Top 10 finish at the Hong Kong Open, but he also won the Malaysian Open on this track earlier in the year, which followed his Top 10 finish the previous year. Lahiri is a multiple winner on the European Tour this year he followed up his Malaysian win by winning the Indian Open two weeks later. If Anirban has decided to give up playing in the first Final Series event on the European Tour to play here, he obviously fancies his chances this week.
Garry Woodland 45/1 with StanJames has had two runners-up finishes in this event since it moved to the Kuala Lumper G&CC in 2013 which is evidence he likes playing on this course. Garry is another player that has had an up and down year with eight Top 25, but has also had fifteen missed cuts. Woodland hasnt played competitively since the end of September and will have been working on his game and what better place to start your season than on a course where you have come so close to winning.
My outside tips
There are two very good outside bets this week and I am not sure how long you will get these odds for, but Richard T Lee 400/1 with 888Sport followed up his Top 20 finish here in the 2013 Malaysian Open with a Top 5 and S.S.P Chowrasia 400/1 with 888Sport also had a Top 10 finish here this year again in the Malaysian Open even after opening with a round of 76. And at these odds I think theyre worth a cheeky 50p each-way bet.
