The regular tour heads to Greensboro North Carolina and it has a feeling of “After the Lord Majors show” but I am sure once the tournament gets underway, we will have some great golf, and what a course to be playing on.
Donald Ross originally designed Sedgefield Country Club back in 1926 the track was redesigned by Kris Spence in 2007. The 7,130 yard par 70 layout has a reputation for low scoring, which should make for an exciting tournament.
The Wyndham Championship is the last regular event on the PGA Tour, which means this is the last chance to earn FedEx Cup points and claim a place in the playoffs. The Wyndham Championship already has become a playoff event for major winners who are outside the Top 125, such as Trevor Immelman 66/1, YE Yang 66/1, and Justin Leonard 125/1.
My tips to win:
I am not sure Carl Petterson 20/1 would have caught Rory McIlroy at the PGA, but I am sure the two shot penalty on the first hole didn’t help Carl’s momentum. He already has a win and three other Top 5 finishes this season and he is also a past winner of this event.
Brandt Snedeker 22/1 was the 2007 champion here and has two other Top 10 finishes in this event since his victory. Brandt has not been in great form since his third place at the Open Championship and hopefully he will pick up some positive vibes from being back at Sedgefield Country Club.
Bill Haas 28/1 dropped twelve places on the final day of the PGA Championship with his final round of 73. Its not been a vintage year for last years FedEx Cup winner, but he does have one win to his name this year and he will want to kick on coming into the FedEx play-offs.
My each-way tips:
Ryan Moore 45/1 won this event in a play-off in 2009, he missed the cut at last weeks PGA Championship, but did have a Top 10 finish the week before at the John Deere Classic and has three other Top 10 finishes this year.
Jimmy Walker 80/1 looked like he was going to make a charge in his final round at last weeks PGA Championship, firing 3 birdies in his first four hole to move to -4 for the tournament, but he couldn’t maintain that form and finished on level par for the week. Jimmy does have six Top 25 finishes this year, three of those in the Top 10.
Outside bet:
This is Daniel Summerhays 80/1 second season on the PGA Tour and he seems to be growing in confidence which has seen him make the Top 10 in four events, three of those were Top 5 finishes, so these represent good odds for the lad from Utah.
This week sees the return of the World Golf Championship (WGC) at one of the most iconic golf courses on the US Tour, The Firestone Country Club, in Akron, Ohio has a long history having hosted PGA Tour events for over five decades. The South Course with its great views of the Firestone water tower provides a challenging, test.
Opened back in 1929 and designed by Bert Way, it then had a redesign by Robert Trent Jones in 1960. It’s a tough track at 7,400 yards with two halves of 35 making a par 70.
No surprise to see Tiger Woods 5/1 at the top of the betting odds, Firestone is a course Tiger loves, winning seven times on this track and I do feel he will do well here this week if not win it, but I don’t think the odds reflect where Tiger is at the moment.
My tips to win:
I am hoping that the setback Adam Scott 16/1 suffered at this years Open Championship spurs him on to defend his title here this week. It was tough to watch but I believe he has the game and more importantly the mental toughness needed to come back and learn from what happened.
Hunter Mahan 35/1 finished the Canadian Open with a flourish firing a final round 66, he had a steady Open Championship finishing inside the Top 20. A past winner here and with a WGC championship already won this season look for Hunter to make it a double this week.
I am not sure if he will want to win this week, but I think Graeme McDowell 35/1 will be in the thick of it come Sunday night and he will want to prove to himself after his final round 75 at the Open Championship put paid to his chances of winning, that he can produce on the final day.
My each-way tips:
I am going to tip Brandt Snedeker 66/1 again this week, I thought he would do well in the Canadian Open, but maybe that was to soon after his third place at the Open Championship, but a final round of 66 in Canada sees Brandt coming into this week with full confidence in his golf game.
Nicolas Colsaerts 61/1 has teed it up twice this year in WGC events and has just been outside the Top 30 both times, but I feel the tall Belgium lad is looking to take that next step on the ladder. He started the Open Championship with a bang before fading, but I think he has the game to do well on this monster of a track.
Outside bet:
A good outside bet here this week is Ian Poulter 70/1, Ian played well in the Open Championship and seems to becoming back into form and will want to do well here with the last major of the year coming up next week.
