The 6th green with back bunker
Mountain back drop at the 7th Plenty of bunkers on the 15th hole
First up for me is Club Campestre Guaymaral in BogotŠ. Itís here that I first realise that altitude has a big effect on how you play the game in Colombia. We pull up outside the beautifully appointed modern clubhouse, where the service is faultless. The guys that work in the locker rooms take good care of you from the moment you walk in to the second you leave, with your shoes looking like youíve just taken them out of the box.
I get to the practice ground that has everything you need: a full-length driving range, chipping green with bunker and putting green. I start hitting balls and straight off the bat you realise that the ball is going further than you expect; after a couple of quick warm-up wedges, I start knocking easy 7-irons up near the 180-yard mark. Iím loving this.
So itís off to the tee with my caddy. Theyíll cost you about $25 and itís highly recommended Ė all the caddies I had on this trip where very competent.
The first hole is a really nice opener that ranges from 391 to 309 yards depending on which of the four tee options you choose. Itís a dogleg left, and remembering how far the ball flies here youíll probably be better off taking a 3-wood so you donít run out of fairway.
The course is a really enjoyable track. Listen to your caddy as there is plenty of water to avoid, which comes into play on 13 of the 18 holes. None are more memorable than the par-5, 590-yard twelfth hole with its island green.
My standout holes are; the short par-4 dogleg second, especially from the back tee. Make sure you take a look from the back tee on the par-5 fifth; the trees make it look like one of the tightest tee shots Iíve ever seen.
The run of holes from the eighth to tenth and 12th to 15th are the best on the course. Youíll really enjoy the two par-3s: the eighth and 14th are both over water and the ninth is a great finishing hole to the front nine. There are another 18 holes here, but unfortunately I didnít have time to play that track.
