The Riviera Country Club was established in 1926 and has been open for play since 1927. Noted for its spectacular beauty and uniquely challenging design, the George C. Thomas masterpiece is perennially rated among the very finest in the world.

During the courses construction the renowned golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie paid a visit to inspect Thomas’s work. Following his tour of the property, Dr. MacKenzie remarked that the site “Was as fine as any I have seen" and that the George C Thomas’ design is “As nearly perfect as man could make it.”

Sometimes known as "Hogan's Alley" because of Ben Hogan's success here, it is also renowned for its par-3 sixth hole with a bunker in the middle of the green.

The 18th is probably one of golf's most unique and most recognised finishing holes. The green rests below the clubhouse in a natural amphitheater and a blind tee shot from below the level of the fairway must carry the crest of the hill to give you a decent look at the green.

My tips to win:

I am going to stick with Dustin Johnson 5/1 – with PaddyPower – this week after his runner-up finish at Pebble Beach and he is also the defending champion of this event. Dustin didn’t have the greatest of final rounds last weekend and he didn’t – as expected – put too much pressure on Ted Potter, Jr, but I feel he will want to put that right especially coming back here defending his title in a tournament that he also has two runner-up finishes.

Phil Mickelson 25/1 – with SportingBet – should be buzzing walking through the gates of TPC Harding Park this week, it’s been a while since Mickelson has been in this sort of form and last weeks runner-up finish made it three Top 5s from six starts on the wraparound season. Phil has won this event twice and has two other runner-up finishes he obviously enjoys San Francisco and playing in front of his home support.

This tip came down to Paul Casey 30/1 –with 888Sport – or Tommy Fleetwood 33/1 – with PaddyPower – and I am going to go with Tommy mainly because Casey has not won on the PGA Tour since 2009 and on the European Tour since 2014. Tommy comes into this week after defending his Abu Dhabi HSBC title and finishing in the Top 6 in his two other starts on the European Tour.

My each-way tips:

With two Top 10s from his last four starts its hard to say which Ollie Schniederjans 45/1 – with Bet365 – will be teeing it up this week, because he missed the cut in the other two tournaments in that run. In fact if he was to keep the current progression going he is due to miss the cut this week. The reason I don’t feel that will happen is because Ollie had a Top 10 finish in this event last year firing all four rounds in the 60s and I expect him to be back challenging this week.

Bubba Watson’s 50/1 – with SportingBet – has two victories in this tournament both coming at the Riviera Country Club. Bubba withdrew from this event last year, but I feel his game is in a lot better shape than it has been in a while and he looked solid at Pebble Beach and I expect that to continue this week and I feel these are good odds for the Floridian.

My outside tip:

It has been a tough few years for Jimmy Walker 90/1 – with Bet365 – after being diagnosed with Lyme disease, but the good news seems to be that he has found a new course of antibiotics that seem to have helped and a Top 10 at the weekend after starting the wraparound season with three missed cuts hopefully shows the Texan is getting back to his self. If that is the case these are very good odds.

Longer odds:

Try Jim Furyk 250/1 – StanJames – It was a tough end of year for the Pennsylvanian and this will be the first time that Jim has teed it up this year, Jim has had several Top 15 finishes here including a Top 5 and I think after spending some time away working on his game, he will have that hunger back this week.

As always good luck
