Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream of Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead, they acquired the land back in 1966 but construction didn’t begin until July 1972. The golf course, which is situated on 220 acres and was officially opened for play on Memorial Day 1974 with an exhibition match between Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf.

Muirfield Village currently sits in Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest Courses," at number 15. After recent changes the course now measures 7,221 and has 71 bunkers and water comes into play on 11 holes.

The Memorial Tournament has grown into one of golf's major tournaments and Muirfield Village Golf Club, which is controlled by Jack Nicklaus, makes changes to the course each autumn in order to keep up with new technology.

In recent years changes have included lengthening several holes, including the first, tenth, twelfth and seventeenth, adding or removing bunkers, re-routing a stream on the eighteenth. In 2007, the par-three 8th and the par five 15th were both lengthened and bunkers on the 1st re-shaped and deepened to the hole tougher.

My tips to win:

It is hard to argue that Dustin Johnson 6/1 – with SportingBet – will be the favourite coming into this week with three wins, a runner up and two other Top 6 finishes from nine starts this year, the fact we feel he has gone off the boil with Top 15 finishes from his last two starts shows the consistency we have come to expect from the laidback South Carolinian. Muirfield village was not a course Dustin played well on until the last two years, but a Top 5 finish last year shows the work he has put in and I expect him to be challenging again this week.

Chasing him hard will be John Rahm 12/1 – with PaddyPower – who is right on the heels of Johnson when it comes to consistency with a win, two runner-up finishes and three other Top 5s. This will be the first time that John has teed it up at Muirfield village and it will be interesting to see how quickly he adapts, but going by the rest of the season you can bet he will be in the thick of the battle again come Sunday

One person I would have expected to have already won here is Adam Scott 25/1 – with Ladbrokes – I feel the course is perfectly set up for the Australians game and with three Top 5 finishes he has come close firing a 62 in 2007 on the way to one of those finishes. Adam has two Top 10s from his last three starts and his sixth place at The Players should see him come into this week in confident mood and looking to break his duck here.

My each-way tips:

Muirfield village is a course Matt Kuchar 33/1 – with Coral – enjoys playing he is a past winner, he also has runner-up and finished in the Top 5 last year. It has been a strange season for “Kooch” who has missed a couple of cuts and has not really challenged apart from The Masters where a final round of 67 put him in the mix. But things have started to come together in recent events and a couple of Top 15s from his last two starts and coming back here, I think we will see him challenging again this week.

Tony Finau 50/1 – with 32Red – has teed it up twice on the Muirfield village track and finished inside the Top 12 from both starts so it's a course that suits his eye and game. It has been a strange year for Tony but that is to be expected as it’s only his third full season on the PGA Tour, but apart from five missed cuts he does have four Top 10s – three of which were Top 5 placing’s. Tony has shot three rounds of 65 over his last two starts and I don’t think he is that far from putting it all together.

My outside tips:

There are several good outside tips this week Charl Schwartzel 70/1 – with Bet365 – who has several Top 10 finishes here and was just outside of that last year. Mark Leishman 70/1 – with Bet365 – has two Top 11 finishes in the last two years and if you want longer odds try JB Holmes 100/1 – with Bwin – who has several good finishes here with his best being a Top 5 last year.

As always good luck
