The Riviera Country Club was established in 1926 and has been open for play since 1927. Noted for its spectacular beauty and uniquely challenging design, the George C. Thomas masterpiece is perennially rated among the very finest in the world.

During the courses construction the renowned golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie paid a visit to inspect Thomas’s work. Following his tour of the property, Dr. MacKenzie remarked that the site “Was as fine as any I have seen" and that the George C Thomas’ design is “As nearly perfect as man could make it.”

Sometimes known as "Hogan's Alley" because of Ben Hogan's success here, it is also renowned for its par-3 sixth hole with a bunker in the middle of the green.

The 18th is probably one of golf's most unique and most recognised finishing holes. The green rests below the clubhouse in a natural amphitheater and a blind tee shot from below the level of the fairway must carry the crest of the hill to give you a decent look at the green.

My tips to win:

Dustin Johnson 9/1 – with BetFair – probably feels he should have at least won here once with two runner-up and three other Top 5 finishes and one of those runner-up places was when he lost out to James Hahn 200/1 – with 32Red – in a play-off two years ago. I think he is due a win in this event.

I am glad Hideki Matsuyama 10/1 – with SportingBet – took last week off after winning the Phoenix Open, it gives him time for the adrenalin to settle down and go again this week. Hideki has a good record here having teed it up three times and finishing inside the Top 25 each time with forth place two years ago being his best so far. With three wins, two runner-up and a sixth place finish from eight starts on the wraparound season, he will be the man to beat this week.

Although Sergio Garcia 25/1 – with BetVictor – missed the cut here last year he was sitting in the Top 5 the year before and has numerous Top 15 finishes over the Riviera Country Club track. I do love the way Sergio runs his schedule and he just seems to turn up and be right in the thick of it come Sunday after taking months off. That was the case two weeks ago in Europe where Garcia teed it up for the first time this year on the European Tour and won the Dubai Desert Classic, so he will be in confident mood here this week.

My each-way tips:

Someone who is a past champion here is Bubba Watson 35/1 – with BetVictor – who has won this event twice in the last three years – Bubba still made the Top 15 the year he was defending his first win – and is defending champion this week. Watson has three other Top 20s here. He may not be in the greatest form at the moment but he sure likes this track.

So too does Phil Mickelson 45/1 – with SportingBet – who has a love/hate relationship with the Riviera CC with back-to-back wins, two runner-up but he also has a bunch of missed cuts. It will come down to Phil’s driving as usual this week and I am sure he will want to put last weeks final round 77 to bed, which put him outside the Top 25 for the first time this season.

My outside tip:

Last time Thomas Pieters 125/1 – SportingBet – pitched up on the PGA Tour was at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last year, he did make the cut but was far from challenging. Thomas has come a long way since that event and at these odds could be a very good bet. Luke Donald 200/1 – with PaddyPower – has lost his way the last couple of years, but a third round 65 at last weeks AT&T ProAm could just be the boost he needs coming to a course where he has had runner-up and third place finishes.

As always good luck
