The European Tour is back in action this week at the Open de España with the backing of Sergio Garcia’s Foundation, teeing up at Europe’s very own “Augusta”, the Robert Trent Jones designed Valderrama.

Originally known as Los Aves sitting above the Andalucian village of Sotogrande, billionaire Jaime Ortiz-Patino purchased the course and asked Trent Jones to come back out and reshape the course in 1985. The course has hosted the Volvo Masters but is most notably remembered for Seve’s captaining of the 1997 Ryder Cup matches.

The 17th hole is the most memorable hole from those Ryder Cup matches and became the perfect risk and reward hole. Named Los Gabiones it was once just a long par five before Trent Jones' redesign and by adding the water feature just in front of the green, it became a must watch hole during the 1997 matches.

In June 2014 King Juan Carlos of Spain granted Valderrama the Royal title, the club is now known as Real Club Valderrama.

My tips to win:

It is hard to tell how the players travelling back from The Masters will react this week and Rafa Cabrera-Bello 14/1 – with Bet365 – comes into this tournament in great form after four straight Top 20s from his four starts on the PGA Tour, and with two runners-up positions on the European Tour it only seems a matter of time before the Spaniard adds to his two European tour wins.

Joost Luiten 25/1 – with Ladbrokes – will have some re-evaluating to do after missing the cut at the Indian Open after starting the season in solid form. As I have stated before about this year for Joost, it would be great to see him in the Ryder Cup, but after seeing the leaderboard at The Masters there are a lot of people trying to stake a claim and after missing out at Gleneagles the Dutchman needs to put a couple of wins together if he is going to make the team this time round.

Thomas Pieters 45/1 – with StanJames – already has a couple of Top 5 finishes to his name this year after winning two events last year. This is Pieters' third year on the European Tour and he has come a long way in such a short space of time, he will no doubt be inspired by how well the European Tour players competed at The Masters this year and he will be looking to push on up the world rankings to try and make Augusta next year and a win here will go a long way to doing that.

My each-way tips:

I think these are great odds for Pablo Larrazabal 80/1 – with Betfred – who has been playing some solid golf but nothing great, but I just have a feeling he will put it all together soon and what better place than in front of his home support. 2011/12 Larrazabal had back-to-back top 5s with a runners-up in there and it only seemed a matter of time before he would win his national Open. I think we may see him competing at the top of the leaderboard again this year.

Some of you regular readers will know that I feel it is only a matter of time before Jorge Campillo 70/1 – with Bet365 – wins his maiden European Tour event and what better place to do that then in front of your home fans. Jorge has been playing well recently with three Top 20s from his last three starts and five Top 20s from eight starts this year and he will be looking to continue that run of form this week.

My outside tip:

I was quite surprised to see David Lipsky 100/1 – with SportingBet – this far down the betting odds tables, especially for someone who has had three Top 20s from his last three starts with two of those being Top 10 finishes. The bookies probably feel that Lipsky will crash and burn again and go back into the pack but the American already has a win on the European Tour back in 2014 and I think he may just keep his good run of form going this week.

As always good luck
